The component was stuck for too long and lung tissue grew around it
A terrifying experience befell a 35-year-old Indian woman, Varsha Sahu, after she accidentally inhaled the vine of her nose piercing. This is a rare but potentially fatal event that has brought attention to the dangers associated with this ornamental practice, especially if not carried out with due precautions.
Like many women Hindu, Varsha had been wearing her nose piercing for 16 years, a symbol of her new status after marriage. One day, just two months ago, as she took a deep breath, a truly harmless action, her screw suddenly came loose, ending up in her lungs.

She didn't worry initially, convinced that the metal object would follow its natural course through the digestive system. But the reality was very different. She would not have reached the digestive system. The screw was stuck in a lungcausing unremitting pain and difficulty breathing.
Only after a month of suffering, tormented by one persistent cough and from the symptoms of incipient pneumonia, Varsha finally turned to a doctor. X-rays revealed the presence of the screw in her lung, a shocking discovery that explained the origin of her ailments.
Attempts to remove the piercing screw with the bronchoscopy they turned out to be in vain. The object had been stuck for too long and lung tissue had already grown around it, making extraction extremely delicate.

Faced with this situation, Varsha was forced to undergo a surgery. A complex and decidedly risky operation, which Dr Debraj Jash, pulmonologist at the Medica Superspecialty Hospital who followed the case, described as “extremely rare”. The doctor explained:
In the past we have had to remove objects from the lungs of children or the elderly, but a woman her age is truly an exception.
The medical literature records only others two similar cases in the last 10 years. The operation to remove the piercing component lasted approximately 30 minutes and required the utmost attention from the medical team. The screw was firmly fixed in the lung and extracting it without damaging the surrounding tissue was a difficult task.
Fortunately theoperation it was a success and Varsha was discharged from the hospital after four days. She declared that she had no intention of putting her nose piercing back: “I didn't think something like this could happen, but it happened. And I don't want it to happen again,” were the woman's first words.
Varsha's story reminds everyone those who wear piercings, especially on the nose, it is essential to ensure that the jewelry is well fixed and of high quality. Another aspect to underline is that any abnormal symptom, such as persistent cough, breathing difficulties must be evaluated immediately as they are possible indicators of a foreign object in the airways.
