Hyundai’s high-performance range expanded over the course of the year with the debut of Kona’s N variant. A real Sports SUV, which makes performances its main interpretation. Recently, we had the opportunity to test the sports crossover of the Korean car manufacturer, both in an urban environment and on a long distance that took us from Milan to Bologna. Before understanding what our driving sensations were, let’s do the picture of the situation of this top model in Hyundai’s N range.
The performance vocation of this SUV is evident right from his design. We are talking about a sporty crossover that boasts a length of 4,215 mm, a width of 1,800 mm and a height of 1,565 mm: aesthetically speaking, the exclusive red details in pure Hyundai N style steal the show, the body-colored coatings that combine. with 19 ″ wheels, fenders that emphasize the muscular volume of the SUV, the front grille with a dedicated design, the integrated N logo and an aggressive light signature. The Hyundai logo colored in dark satin gray, which on this version of the Kona was moved down from the hood. Rounding out the overview are red brake calipers, an N logo on the wheel hubcaps, an exclusive miniskirt with a red profile and the N logo and a large double-wing spoiler on the roof.
Even inside the passenger compartment, all the specifications present recall sportiness and performance. Starting with the exclusive sports steering wheel N, which has an optimized design for a perfect grip and a button layout designed for dynamic driving, to get to the paddles on the steering wheel, which instead allow the driver to change gear without taking their hands off the wheel for an even sportier drive. Elsewhere, the handbrake is covered in non-slip perforated leather, while the N logos are placed on the gearbox, handbrake, doors and seats, so as to convey the feeling of high-level performance at every point. The equipment of the seats: the front ones are heated as standard, while the rear ones can be heated as an option. The configuration with the suede leather upholstery, then, is equipped with electric seats as standard, while it is an option for the fabric and leather seats.
Being a model of Hyundai’s N range, the aspect that arouses most curiosity is undoubtedly that linked to the engine and consequently to performance on the road. Powering the high-performance variant of the Korean SUV is a 2.0 liter GDI turbo engine, capable of unleashing a total power of 280 hp and delivering a maximum torque of 392 Nm. In combination with this powerful engine is combined with an N DCT gearbox, an 8-speed transmission in oil bath with two separate clutches that guarantees a better faster acceleration and gear changes. Three functions that enhance the car’s capabilities by using one specific management of exchange rate logics: N Power Shift, N Grin Shift and N Track Sense Shift. The second, more conveniently called NGS, can be used directly through a dedicated button on the steering wheel, and allows you to maximize engine and DCT performance for 20 seconds.
In appearance technology and connectivity, stands out the presence of a 10.25 “digital instrument panel with N graphics, a 10.25” AVN touchscreen display and a Performance Head-Up Display, which displays information such as engine rpm, speed or indicator of gear changes while driving in Sport or N mode. These are just two of the five driving modes available to the driver: the others are Eco, Normal and Custom, each of which, once selected, regulates the engine parameters differently, electronic stability control, exhaust sound and steering according to driving conditions. Final comment on the price: the new Hyundai Kona N has a price list of 42,500 euros, with a selling price of 37,950 euros and a total customer benefit of 4,550 euros.
We then come to our test of the high-performance variant of the sports SUV of the Korean car manufacturer, which has proven great adaptability both on urban and extra-urban roads and on the motorway. The compact dimensions of this crossover give it great agility, coupled with an extremely competitive engine response every time you step on the accelerator pedal. The automatic transmission is very fluid, with gear changes that are almost imperceptible, and thanks to a rather large tank it is possible to make long journeys without the nightmare of having to stop and refuel. In short, a car that combines performance and versatility at maximum power: this is new Hyundai Kona N.
