The electric Hyundai Ioniq 6 it has on its side a high technological profile and a design that is certainly different from what we have become accustomed to seeing recently. This is a sedan with a streamliner shape, and despite its length, it can boast elegance. Especially at the front, where simplicity is noted, while at the rear the style is more complex. Pixels also dominate the scene, used for the front and rear lights, and for additional elements inside. The Ioniq 6 is a car that essentially combines the Streamliner style of the 1930s and 1940s with today’s modern technology, with a touch of… Minecraft.
Nicola DanzaExterior Design Manager of Hyundai’s European Style Center, talked to us about the main features of the car and how it is much more Korean than it may seem. “Today, automotive design is converging on fairly common styles, regardless of where the cars come from“- recognized Danza -“But I I still consider the Ioniq 6 a very Korean car. When I go to South Korea and look at the temples, I immediately notice these curvatures that the car also has, and the so-called geometric ‘accelerations’. The arc of the car has the same type of voltage. We are an Asian company after all, and having a few touches that reminds us of what happens in Korea is a guide towards our identity. The pixel itself is inspired by the Korean alphabet, with its precision. We also talk about ambient lights: if you walk in Seoul in the evening, you will find the same atmospheres, with crazy light effects. We played with this aspect, to give the cabin a sense of relaxation but also of personality. In general, at work we have elements on the walls that remind us of the principles of Korean design, and we always take them into account; if we wanted to change this soul we would risk ending up in the generic“.
According to Danza, there are three main design features of the car: the profile, the clean exterior of the lines and the digital mirrors. “The arched architecture of the profile is the basis of the exterior but also the interior style. This architecture allows us to have a better approach in terms of aerodynamics in the wind tunnel, with a low front to avoid as much as possible that the flow is handled incorrectly. The lateral appendages in the front are more positioned towards the inside, to create a better flow gap around the wheels than in the past ”.
“In the rear we have a spoiler, which in addition to being functional because it houses the third stop with its pixels, helps us to disconnect the flow and avoid the parachute effect. As well as on the side area there are many small tricks that make the aerodynamics clean, even the surface treatment was precise: we have chosen as few interruptions as possible, with flush surfaces without excessive edges. Not to mention the disappearance of the handles and the digital mirrors ”.
“This cleanliness is also reflected in the interior, also as a matter of style coherence. We have a wing effect dashboard, which allows us to position the screens connected to the digital mirrors in a strategic way. They work well and are also beautiful to look at: let’s not forget that monitors are boxy elements. From the outside, on the other hand, they seem hidden and inside they are visible without particular distractions. The cockpit for us must always remain functional. And since it is an electric car, even if it takes 20 minutes to partially charge the battery, you can stay inside and wait using many small elements that can give you comfort. I wouldn’t use the word livable, because that’s not the point: but in a car you always have to feel comfortable, regardless of whether you are driving or waiting.“.
