Hyundai and Healthy Seas, an organization for the conservation of the marine environment, have renewed their pan-European partnership for another year. The two entities will continue to work together for combat marine pollutionpower sustainable marine ecosystems and support thecircular economy. The renewal of the partnership stems from the success of its first year, 2021, which saw Hyundai and Healthy Seas organize eleven activations in seven European countries: from waste collection activities, such as beach cleaning and underwater events to recover nets from abandoned fisheries (so-called ghost nets), to educational programs that explained to children and local communities the importance of keep the world’s oceans clean.
The event that kicked off the partnership was held in Ithaca (Greece) and was the largest Healthy Seas project to date in terms of positive environmental impact and community engagement. Thanks to forty-five participants, twenty divers and fifteen organizations, four beaches and two bays were cleaned, and recovered five tons of ghost nets, thirty-two tons of metal and thirty-nine tons of plastic wasteincluding one hundred and fifty bags of expanded polystyrene beads.
Hyundai continued to support Healthy Seas’ underwater ghost net recovery expeditions at Ijmuiden in the Netherlands, on the Italian island of Lampedusa, in Newcastle in the UK, on the German island of Norderney and in Tossa de Mar in Spain. Seventy-two volunteer divers were involved in all cleaning activities, helping to recover more than seventy-eight tons of waste in the form of ghost nets, crab and lobster cages, lead and other marine litter.
The partnership’s activities were not limited to cleaning operations. The collected waste was regenerated and transformed into sustainable ECONYL nylonwhich was then used to produce the electric car mats Ioniq 5.
In 2022, Hyundai and Healthy Seas will consolidate their partnership and expand its reach by organizing three major clean-up operations, which they will include the partnership’s first non-European project: a ghost net recovery activity in South Korea. In addition to continuing with the clean-up activities, in 2022 the collaboration will strive to raise awareness of even more people on marine pollution across the continent. Five educational activities will take place this year, helping the younger generation understand their fundamental role in fighting ocean pollution and showing them strategies for living more sustainably.
