On Saturday 23 October we attended the official presentation event of Hydroracers: The Schneider Trophy Epic, the new project launched by Max Pinucci, the creator of Airsphip: Norh Pole Quest. The event, held behind closed doors, was hosted in the wonderful location of the historical military museum of Vigna di Valle, inside a vast hangar inside which wonderful seaplanes were kept.
This new and ambitious project aims to make us relive the myth of Schneider Cup, one of the most wonderful and dangerous competitions that have been lost in history. The date of October 23 was not chosen randomly, but it is the anniversary of the 4th edition of the trophy. During the presentation, guests of international standing took turns who paid homage to the historic competition, telling us really interesting facts and anecdotes. During the evening, they alternated close to Max Pinucci the Gen. Giovanni F. Adamo, Gregory Alegi, Andrea Angiolino, Col. Rosario D’Auria, Gen. Basilio Di Martino, Hideaki Ozawa (with a clip), François-Gilles Ricard, Gen. Sergio A. Scalese. The goal was to make us understand how interesting this type of competition could be in the early 1930s.
Like any project of Max Pinucci, the cultural and historical part comes first than the playful one, used in a “secondary” way to give us notions on what history has overwhelmed and tried to hide in the annals. In this context it was wonderful to understand how at the time Schneider Cup was a prize of incredible caliber, to the point that many gave their lives to participate and win the coveted trophy. Thanks to these stories we perfectly understood how much the conquest of the sky was coveted in the 30s, and not for nothing all the hype that today revolves around the most common sports was entirely centered on those wonders that fought in the sky, in search of glory. The world of seaplanes has certainly remained submerged by modern technologies, but it continues to hide an incredible charm.
We were stunned to hear certain stories, records and follies made in order to get closer to victory, all these stories have fed our curiosity and that is why we can’t wait to be able to buy the title. Hydroracers is a particularly intriguing project, as Max Pinucci sought very high profile collaborations, such as the close one withair Force (as regards the study and historical study) or with the designer Hideaki Ozawa, until you get to Platypus Games, team responsible for the realization of the board game. Precisely for this reason, the title will be sold with a book of great editorial scope (the result of an international collaboration that follows the success of Airships | Designed for greatness, the illustrated history), the board game, 1: 144 scale hydro racing models and a multimedia exhibition inspired by the history of the Trophy. As explained during the event, Hydroracers is in short:
“An aeronautical culture project to remember the history, the pilots, the machines, the epic of the seaplanes that competed in the golden age of aviation”.
The great Max has already shown the world to be able to excite users with historical aspects little known to most, having known his first title has made us understand with how much care and with how meticulous everything has been created. Hearing him tell and reading his writings is truly something that manages to cross over from the universe of board games, but which we find perfectly in tune with this world. The playful part has often been used for learning (especially for children), the game aims to accompany us step by step rather than trivially surround the vast amount of historical notions that we will be able to acquire. The evening was mainly used to introduce us to the historical aspects of the game and unfortunately we have not yet had the opportunity to try or know the dynamics of this Hydroracers, the only thing we know is that it is inspired by the best known Wings of War and this really gives us hope. Keep following us if you want to know all the developments on Hydroracers: The Schneider Trophy Epic.
