From electric to hybrid. The New Fiat 500 is evolving and is ready to bring a mild-hybrid version to the market that can boost sales but above all meet Mirafiori’s relaunch needs, especially in terms of employment. The official announcement came from Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, who explained how the group’s plans are to also bring an MHEV version of the Cinquino to the lines of the Turin factory, on the same basis as the electric 500.
The future of the new Fiat 500
An almost obligatory choice given that EVs are struggling to take off from a sales point of view in Italy and Fiat’s registration data do nothing but highlight this aspect: just think that the 500 hybrid was sold in 100,000 units in Italy in 2023 and that instead the electric 500 stopped at just 62,000 units. The new version of the Cinquino with mild-hybrid technology will be based on the platform of the electric 500, modified to accommodate an internal combustion engine, with some specific calibrations to adapt to a variant with a combustion engine.
Engine and price
From a stylistic point of view there shouldn’t be too many new features. There will be divided light clusters and a very marked family feeling, with new air intakes in the lower part for cooling the ICE components. At the rear we will then find the exhaust terminal with some specific elements for alloy wheels and a range of colours. Under the bonnet there will then be space for an MHEV engine, with different options for Fiat engineers thanks to group synergies. In fact, in Stellantis there is the 1.0 70 HP which is already an option on the current generation of Fiat 500 Hybrid but among the possibilities there could also be the 1.2 100 HP which is used by the new Lancia Ypsilon and also by 600 and Jeep Avenger. It will also be interesting to understand where the price list of the new Fiat 500 hybrid will be placed: it is possible that the price could fluctuate between 18,000 and 20,000 euros.
