Hurricanes|Hurricane Helene has barely recovered when Milton has already made landfall in Florida.
The summary is made by artificial intelligence and checked by a human.
Sari Suikkari tells how Hurricane Milton affects Inverness, Florida.
The storm has caused power outages and strong winds, wind speed around 112 km/h.
Florida is still recovering from the previous hurricane Helene, which claimed several lives.
Finnish Sari Suikkari answers the phone at his home in Inverness, Florida after midnight local time. Hurricane Milton is raging outside, whose sounds Suikkari listens to in his own bedroom.
“The wind is quite shocking. Wind gusts are around 70 mph [noin 112 kilometriä] per hour, we are somewhere between a hurricane and a tropical storm,” says Suikkari.
In Inverness, the storm has been seen as continuous rain and strong winds all day. According to him, water has come “by the bucketful”. And of course as a power outage that started in the early evening at Suikkari’s home.
According to him, the situation is the same for all residents of Inverness, the whole city seems to be in darkness.
However, Suikkar has a gasoline-powered generator at home, which produces electricity for the needs of the home.
in Florida has barely had time to recover from the previous hurricane, Helene, which raged in the United States a couple of weeks ago. Suikari told HSthat at that time the waves on the beach rose to a height of more than three meters.
“12 people died in Pinellas County,” Suikkari says now.
“They drowned in their homes because of the storm surge.”
Suikkari doesn’t live on the beach and his house, built in 2018, is a solid piece of work. Although many have left for evacuation, Suikkari has not wanted to leave his home. Three dogs and horses should not be left to their own devices.
A few hours ago, Suikkari had received a message from the county authorities saying that no one would be rescued anymore, the wind had gotten too strong.
Although hurricanes are not unusual in Florida, according to Suikkar, who has lived in the area for five years, there is something different about Milton. He says he has never seen a storm like this before.
“There are a lot of neighbors here that I’ve talked to, and even if I’ve lived here longer, everyone has been tense and nervous,” says Suikkari.
“But what you do to nature, you do to nothing.”
In the following hours, Suikkari’s plan is to try to rest. At some point you have to go add more gas to the generator and the dogs should pee.
In the morning you have to go and see how the horses are doing.
“Let’s hope for the best and fear the worst,” says Suikkari.
