Hurricane On Monday, Milton quickly strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The level is the highest of the Saffir–Simpson scale.
The NHC estimates that the storm’s wind will blow at its strongest over 70 meters per second.
Milton is forecast to move past the northern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula toward the US state of Florida, where it is expected to make landfall on Wednesday.
Milton is expected to make the worst impact in Florida, which is still recovering from Hurricane Helene, which hit there just under two weeks ago. Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis urged people to repair Helene’s tracks before the new hurricane makes landfall, as it is feared that the flying debris will increase the storm damage of the new hurricane.
In addition, Milton is expected to cause flooding in urban areas and destructive waves in coastal areas.
Although the hurricane is forecast to pass the Yucatan Peninsula, dangerously strong storms are forecast there as well.
Climate change has intensified hurricanes, because the storms get more energy from the warmed seas than before.
