According to local media, Rick caused flooding, fell trees and caused power outages in Guerrero and neighboring Michoacán state. Several families were taken to safety and schools were closed in the seaside town of Acapulco.
Rick is a second highest category hurricane. He is currently heading north. The US Hurricane Center warns of heavy rainfall, strong winds and life-threatening flash floods in southern and western Mexico.
Authorities in Lazaro Cardenas have opened six emergency shelters for people who would like to leave low-lying areas.
