Hungary is ready to return to the world of two wheels: after many doubts and questions, now it’s official: Balaton Park will be the stage for a MotoGP Grand Prix and a Superbike round starting in 2025. The news came during the presentation of Balaton, which was held today in Hungary, and with the official announcement, the dates were also announced: MotoGP will race at Balaton from 22 to 24 August, but the trailblazer will be Superbike, which will travel to Hungary from 25 to 27 July.
Hungary returns to the MotoGP calendar after a 33-year absence, the first race was held in 1990 and 1992. It has been 35 years since the last Superbike race, which was held in 1988 and was confirmed until 1990. Furthermore, the process to return was long: if initially it was thought that Balaton could be an easy insertion, several problems arose that postponed the entry of the new structure. Now, however, everything is ready and the events will be promoted and organized by HUMDA Hungarian Mobility Development Agency Zrt. member of the Széchenyi University Group and will be held at the Balaton Park Circuit in Balatonfőkajár.
In order to host the two major world championships on two wheels, the Balatonfőkajár circuit will undergo additional work to meet the requirements of the FIM Grade A license. At Turn 7, two small radius corners will be created within the original layout, maintaining the high speed and increasing the run-off area. At Turn 11, a new chicane will reduce the speed and increase overtaking opportunities. Directly below the new track hotel, a combination of technical corners will also be built, which will pose a great challenge for the riders. These are the additions that will make the Balaton Park Circuit ready for MotoGP and WorldSBK races.
“We are very pleased to announce that Balaton Park will be part of the 2025 MotoGP™ and WorldSBK calendar,” said Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports. “The circuit is in a spectacular location and will be a fantastic destination for fans to come and see the world’s most exciting sport in action. Work is underway to prepare the venue for its historic debut on the calendar, adding another chapter to Hungary’s history in motorcycle Grand Prix racing, and we look forward to returning to a key Central European market.”
“I would like to thank Carmelo Ezpeleta for the trust he has placed in us over the years and of course the support of the Hungarian government. The hard work of many years is finally coming to fruition, thanks to which we have been included in the calendar of the most followed sports in the world. It is a testimony to the strength of our country that, despite the difficulties, we are here today and can embark on this new path of shared success. Motorsport is emotion and passion, but there is much more. We believe that these sports will promote the engineering knowledge and skills of our country, the excellence of our drivers, the tourism complexity of our country and, of course, the fantastic hospitality and support. And speaking of cheering, the Hungarian heart beats stronger for a Hungarian success, so we will make sure that our talents can show their skills at home races next year and we will cheer for them together,” emphasized Balázs Weingartner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HUMDA Zrt.
