Hungary’s government has proposed that Russia and Ukraine hold peace talks in Budapest, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjartó announced on Friday, reporting that neither party has rejected the idea.
“Budapest can serve as a safe place for negotiating delegations between Russia and Ukraine,” the Hungarian diplomat said in a video posted on Facebook.
“I called my (Russian) colleague Sergey Lavrov and suggested that these meetings take place in Budapest. offering this opportunity”, explained Szijjjártó, quoted by the portal “Index.hu”.
According to the Hungarian minister, “neither Sergey Lavrov nor Andriy Yermak rejected this proposal”.
“I sincerely hope that it will be possible to reach an agreement within a few hours or days to start discussions. The sooner the talks start, the sooner there will be peace and the fewer people will have to die in the war,” he added.
Relations between Hungary and Russia are considered friendly, and the Hungarian prime minister, the ultranationalist Viktor Orbán, is one of Moscow’s best allies in the European Union (EU). NATO member Hungary condemned Russia for attacking Ukraine, but at the same time said that Hungary does not want to get involved in the conflict and consequently refuses to send soldiers or supply weapons to Ukraine.
