Wearing clothes in the colors of the Ukrainian flag and displaying signs saying “No to World War III!” and “Russians go home!”, hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated this Sunday in cities around the world to denounce the invasion of Ukraine.
From Berlin to Baghdad and from Washington to St Petersburg, protesters chanted “Shame!” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, while others waved placards reading “Putin assassin!” or “Stop the monster!”.
In Berlin, 100,000 people took to the streets, police said, while organizers spoke to a crowd of half a million participants.
Gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building of the Chamber of Deputies, protesters carried yellow and blue flags, Ukraine’s national colors.
“Berlin 670 km from the front line”, “Stop the Killer”, “No to the Third World War” were some of the slogans on banners and posters by the protesters, who responded en masse to the call from the Ukrainian community living in Germany.
“My mother is (sheltered) in a basement, (…) my father is at home, on the first floor of a neighborhood in the north of Kiev,” said one of the participants, 35-year-old Ukrainian Valeria Moiseeva, who is pregnant.
“I think it’s important that Germany commits to democracy in Europe and it’s also our responsibility,” said Hans Georg Kieler, 49.
Since Thursday, demonstrations have taken place every day in the German capital, especially in front of the imposing Russian embassy, built on Unter den Linden Avenue, one of the major arteries leading to the Brandenburg Gate.
Germany is home to more than 300,000 people of Ukrainian origin, or nationality, in its territory and also has a large Russian diaspora, especially in Berlin.
In Prague, 70,000 people took to the streets, and in Amsterdam, 15,000.
– Protest in Saint Petersburg –
In Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, around 400 people defied laws banning protests, marching with signs that said “No war!”, “Russians go home!” and “Peace for Ukraine”.
More than 2,000 people were arrested in rallies across the country, after thousands of arrests over the week, but protesters remained steadfast.
In the United States, the capital, Washington, was the scene of a mobilization that brought together thousands of people with Ukrainian and American flags in front of the White House, where they demanded that President Joe Biden do more to stop Putin’s aggression.
Americans took to the streets across the country to denounce Putin and express their support for the Ukrainian people, from San Francisco to Detroit, Chicago and Kansas City. Thousands also demonstrated in the Canadian city of Toronto.
In Lithuania, Belarusian opposition leader Svletana Tijanovskaya led hundreds of compatriots in a protest against the Mink regime for allowing Putin to use its territory as a base to attack Ukraine.
