The initial illusion
From the great comeback in the first laps to the final double placing just outside the points zone: a Canadian Grand Prix who told two different stories for the Haas under the Montreal sky, one of which is particularly interesting. Before the start, in rainy conditions, the US team was the only one to have opted for tyres full wet with both riders, unlike all the other competitors who took to the track with the intermediates.
A choice that initially seemed to have paid off for the team, with the two VF-24s of Hülkenberg and Magnussen proving to have an effective pace more than all the others, to the point of quickly climb back up to interesting positions. All this, however, turned into an illusion after the interruption of the rain and the constant drying of the track, which made it impossible to continue the race on wet tyres.
The final thrill
At that point, Haas was forced to mount intermediate tires, unlike all the others who continued regularly until . A choice that therefore did not lead to the desired results, with Hülkenberg 11th just ahead of his teammate. There was also a big risk for the German a few laps from the end, when the future Sauber driver managed to briefly enslave Tsunodaended up spinning and dangerously rejoined the track without control of the car right in front of him: “With Tsunoda’s spin, I tried to react and avoid it somehow, but it will have been for a few millimetres – has explained – I was prepared for the impact. The first 10 laps went very well, but then the track dried out and so all the work was wasted, but we knew about this scenario. I think it was a clean race, without mistakes, but I think we were a little unlucky with one of the safety cars, I feel like we missed it. In the end, it was a good thing to wait a little later for the slicks, because in the first sector it was difficult to keep them on the track. I gained a few positions, but then I found myself racing in a train with the others. I had high downforce, so on the straights I was an easy target and without DRS I was going quite slowly.”
Only disappointment
Nervousness and disappointment in the words of Magnussen, who did not consider a top ten finish unlikely: “It didn’t seem to me that today we made the most of all the opportunities that the race offered us and we were unable to capitalize on them, therefore it’s a disappointment – admitted the Dane – we will review and try to understand, because everything is a bit confusing at the moment, but for sure there were a lot of opportunities and we didn’t get any points. We had a very slow pit stop and a medium slow pit stop, and I think we also made a pit stop (from full wet to intermediate, ed.) too soon. It seemed like there was something going on at the start of the race, but there is nothing to prove“.
