Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant, paid $1 million to Democrat Tony Podesta to lobby the White House on behalf of the company, double what the lobbyist had previously revealed, according to two knowledgeable people interviewed by Reuters.

Huawei is on the US commercial “black list” and is therefore prevented from selling its products in the country or from dealing with US companies.

Podesta revealed this month that he had received a payment of $500,000 from Huawei, in a lobbying report for the third quarter. But the Washington lobbyist would have received a total of $1 million in installments between June and September, said the sources, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity. He lobbied the White House on behalf of the Chinese company during negotiations between the Department of Justice and Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s chief financial officer, which resulted in an agreement last month to end the bank fraud case against it.
