HS Helsinki The photographer rushed to Suomenlinna alone at night and took an impressive picture of the whole sky tearing green

Last during the bright spring days of the day, a rare sight has been admired in the metropolitan area: northern lights dancing in the sky.

Especially handsome flames in the sky forever Helsinki resident Mikael Rantalainen on the night between Sunday and Monday in Suomenlinna.

Rantalainen, who works as a photographer, actively monitors the northern lights and the discussion about the northern lights on Facebook.

He knew that northern lights were forecast for the night, so when at half-past twelve the meter readings started to look very promising at night, Rantalainen made a quick decision. You can also see the northern lights from home on Lauttasaari, but the most amazing ones would be in Suomenlinna:

“It had to be said that nothing else helped. I watched the next ferry, and in half an hour I had time to get my clothes on and drive to the Market Square, ”says Rantalainen.

In Suomenlinna was quiet in the middle of the night. When, according to forecasts, there is an opportunity to see spectacular northern lights in southern Finland, according to Rantalainen, other northern lights photographers usually arrive.

Rantalainen is particularly fascinated by the fact that northern lights can be placed in an identifiable way in Helsinki.

“The world is full of northern lights somewhere in the swamp or forest,” he says.

At first, Rantalainen saw the northern lights as faint green colors in the sky. He looked for a suitable place to shoot, walked further into Suomenlinna and found the best location.

At half past two at night, the northern lights were at their most spectacular. That’s when Rantalainen got his best pictures.

The northern lights were finally visible in the sky for only about ten minutes.

The photographer returned to the mainland from Suomenlinna on the last ferry, at two o’clock.

How can the northern lights be described in such a central location as Suomenlinna? Doesn’t light pollution make photography difficult?

According to Rantalainen, it is a little more challenging to describe the northern lights in the middle of light pollution, because then only the brightest northern lights are visible.

“And all the northern lights that are near the horizon drown in the pollution of light. That’s why northern lights need to rise moderately high, ”he says.

This time Rantalainen also noticed a northern lights corona at night, meaning the northern lights were directly above his head in the sky.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s forecast, the northern lights of the beginning of the week are already starting to pass. Northern lights for the rest of the week however, may reappear.
