HS Helsinki Stopping the harsh needle exchange point would trigger a fast-moving chain reaction, says the expert – This is how the “Curve effect” is justified

Itis Symppis has a needle exchange point. If Symppis were to be discontinued, it would be as troubling in the East Center as in the Kurvi area.

HS said on Wednesday 22 June that an attempt is being made to evict the Itäkeskus needle exchange point.

The eviction company concerns Itis Sympinen, which is operated by the City of Helsinki and operates in a property located at Turunlinnantie 14. Among other things, Symppis offers health counseling for people with substance abuse and mental health problems. Symppis also has a needle exchange point for drug addicts.

If Itiksen Symppis were evicted from its premises and Itiksen Symppis were to cease operations, the effects of the closure would be reflected in the street view of Itäkeskus. This is what the head of work facing the A-Clinic Foundation, who works with drug users, says Annuska Dal Maso.

“Many Symppis customers have emergency accommodation for one night at a time and they will spend time during their day at Symppis. Without Symppi, more drug users would spend their days on the outskirts of Itäkeskus metro station and Tallinnanaukio. The area would then become more restless. This was the case when Itis Symppis had to be shut down during Korona due to exposure, ”says Dal Maso.

Symposium at the end, the development of Itäkeskus could be similar to that in the Kurvi area.

“It is now more uneasy in the Kurvi area when the low-threshold support activities of the Vailla Permanent Housing Association moved out of the Kurvi area. Customers who have been on curves are now on the street, ”says Dal Maso.

In addition to the phenomenon that may start in Itäkeskus, the closure of Symppis could increase Kontula’s Symppis customer numbers. Kontula also has a needle exchange point.

“Kontula’s Symppis has now been restless from time to time. As the number of customers grows, the number of unrest could increase. ”

June at the beginning of was reportedthat the metropolitan area has had more than a dozen new HIV infections among injecting drug users over the past year. The increase is significant because there were only two cases during 2013-2018.

If there were no longer a needle exchange point in Itäkeskus in the future, the increase in the number of HIV cases could continue, according to Dal Maso.

“Symposium includes HIV tests and hepatitis c tests. If Itiksen Symppis were stopped, there could be more HIV cases. The development would be really dangerous at that time. ”

Itiksen The space used by Symppis is owned by Nitova Oy, which has leased the space to Symppis.

On 10 June, the Board of Turunlinnantie, which owns the property, decided to issue a warning to Nitova Oy that the space will be used for purposes other than those specified in the Articles of Association and the building permit.

The Board of Directors urged Nitova Oy to take the necessary measures without delay to terminate the purpose contrary to the Articles of Association and the building permit, with the threat that the company will convene an Extraordinary General Meeting to decide on the acquisition of Kiinteistö Oy Turunlinnantie for a maximum of three years.
