The walls of Vuosaari metro station are metal mesh. With a flurry of snow, it rains at the station.
Vuosaari the subway platform of the subway station turns into a fatal skating rink on frosty days with blowing snow.
This is made possible by the station’s special wall solution. The wall is actually just a metal mesh. This way, the windy snowdrift can blow directly onto the pier.
The smooth floor tiling of the platform, characteristic of the interior, worsens the situation. When snow falls on the tiles, the end result resembles mirror ice.
From Vuosaari Marja Nyman witnessed two cases of slipping on the pier on Monday.
“A middle-aged couple was walking on the platform and the only woman lost her legs. However, the companion grabbed him by the arm. The woman could have hit her head on the stone floor.”
The second time Nyman saw a young woman slipped on the platform.
“He wasn’t wearing any summer sneakers either, but very sturdy winter shoes.”
The possibility of a potential danger is obvious to Nyman, as many rush to the subway.
“People want the subway in the middle, so they can get directly to the escalator at the train station. Because of this, many people run alongside the train on the platform,” he describes.
Nyman has never seen the pier cleaned or salted.
“Vuok’s position is wonderful anyway. In the summer it’s terribly hot and toasty, and in the winter, if there’s even a little wind, the snow piles up on the pier.”
The topic has sparked a discussion in the Facebook group dealing with Vuosaari issues.
Property manager Anne Mannerkorpi got information about the slippage of the position on Tuesday afternoon, when HS reached out to him for an interview.
On Wednesday morning, he says that the situation at the platform was immediately investigated.
“We alerted property maintenance to the scene and the orderlies to monitor the situation. The pier was sandblasted and a liquid degreaser was put there.”
In addition, the escalator at the western entrance was closed due to slippery conditions.
According to Mannerkorvi’s story, after six in the evening, property maintenance was removing the slipperiness with degreasing liquid at the station. At that time, he himself no longer found the platform slippery.
Continental raven believes that the Vuosaari station is the most challenging of the stations in Helsinki during the winter.
“When it comes to weather, Vuosaari is the most challenging position. In many other stations, the walls are made of glass, but in Vuosaari, the wall is metal mesh.”
Mannerkorpi cannot say why a mesh wall is planned for the station.
According to him, city residents can report slippage and other problems at metro stations to HSL customer service form through.
