The nature photographer saw how an intoxicated dog owner persuaded his dog to kill geese in Suomenlinna. The white-fronted goose is a protected species that requires an exemption to evict.
Helsinki nature photography enthusiast Petteri Hautamaa was in Suomenlinna on Wednesday morning photographing stone pockets and large reeds nesting in the cavities of the walls when he collided with a barren sight.
A drunken crowd was walking the dog. Then they noticed white-fronted geese eating in the nearby lawn area.
“I heard the woman release the dog from the leash and put it on the geese,” Hautamaa says.
The dog attacked the goose herd. The mother birds took off, but the two pups remained on the lawn. The grave was seen when the dog killed the chicks and at least tried to eat one of them.
“The dog started running towards the sea with a baby boy in its mouth and the owner followed. I don’t know what happened after that. I did not feel safe intervening. ”
White-fronted goose is a protected species, the eviction and killing of which requires an exemption granted by the Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY). Deliberate killing of geese would be a nature conservation or animal welfare offense that could result in fines.
In addition, there is an ongoing law on bird nesting peace, in which case dogs must be kept tethered.
The situation faced by Petteri Hautamaa is not the only one of its kind. As early as 2019, HS reported how the townspeople, disgusted by white-fronted geese, took the right into their own hands.

To bury his eyes in the morning, the situation looked brutal.
“I’ve seen in the Svalbard when foxes prey on owls, among other things, but it’s part of nature’s cycle,” he says.
“In this situation, man’s indifference and cruelty were particularly brutal.”

“Some people in Finland have the idea that if something bothers you, it must be killed or eliminated immediately.”
Cemetery is concerned about the change in the attitude of city dwellers towards white-fronted geese.
“You can see in the city when some cyclists don’t even try to brake at the goose herds, but are even ready to ride on it.”
The media also writes about white-fronted geese from a negative point of view. He understands the annoyance of humans from the feces of geese, but notes that it is, after all, a pretty harmless bird.
The cemetery is also raised by other European cities, such as London, where birds are kept in parks as part of park culture. Here, in his view, the opposite is true.
“Some people in Finland have the idea that if something bothers you, it must be killed or eliminated immediately. The same goes for a goose, a wolf or a log. ”
White-fronted goose It nests in almost the entire coastal area of Finland and in some places also inland. Last year, the number of white-fronted geese decreased dramatically in Helsinki, but this spring they moved to the city again by the thousands.
A lot of geese can be seen in Suomenlinna as well, and you have to learn to live together with them, says the property manager of the Suomenlinna administration Kirsti Ängeslevä.
He has not heard of the situation faced by Petteri Hautamaa, and has not encountered similar ones in his work.
“We inform residents every spring about nesting peace and the need to keep dogs connected. It’s unfortunate that this has happened. Irresponsible action from the dog owner. ”
Ängeslevä says that white-fronted geese have not been heard in the speeches of Suomenlinna residents recently. In previous years, there was more discussion about geese.
“Most of them are probably used to having them here and having to live with them,” Ängeslevä says.
