HS Espoo | There is a specialty at the Espoo junction that makes the surface of motorists burn – “May cause confusion”

The confusing intersection in Finno often makes motorists frustrated. The City of Espoo admits that the solution is not optimal.

In Espoo At the intersection of Finnoonsilla and Hannuksentie, there is again a familiar situation. The car turning right onto Hannuksentie rages in a rage at the first car in the queue, which does not start driving even if the green arrow light is on. A journalist living in the Helsingin Sanomat area witnesses similar situations on a weekly basis.

The confusion arises from the fact that from the rightmost lane you can continue both directly towards the metro station under construction in Finno and Hyljelahti, as well as turn right onto Hannuksentie.

You can also go straight ahead from the middle lane of the intersection. But soon after the traffic lights at the intersection, the motorist will in any case have to move to the right-hand lane at the end of the middle lane. For this reason, the right-hand lane would otherwise seem like a more sensible choice to continue directly.

There is also a third lane at the junction, from where you can turn left onto Rusthollarinkatu.

The black car in the picture waited in place until the green arrow light turned orange. The car was continuing straight ahead, where it was impossible to drive when the red light was on.

This traffic at a large four-lane intersection is controlled by both a green spherical traffic light and an arrow light.

When the green arrow light comes on, a car continuing straight – which has quite rightly chosen the right-hand lane according to traffic rules and signage – often waits for a green ball light. If there happens to be a motorist about to turn right behind this, the Horns will start to ring sensitively. A motorist turning to the right does not always understand why the car in front does not start moving when the arrow light is on.

Where from what exactly is this about? City of Espoo City Transport Manager Johanna Nyberg answer the question.

He says one option would be to have no arrow light at all. In this case, you could only turn right when the green spherical light is on and motorists can also drive straight.

“The purpose of the arrow light has been to improve traffic flow and provide additional capacity so that if there are right-turning cars, they can be reached when pedestrians are not crossing the guardrail. It’s a bit like extra green. ”

Nyberg does not remember the discussions at the planning stage of this intersection, but on a general level he says that when the city of Espoo plans lane arrangements, traffic volumes are always taken into account. A solution such as the Finnoonsilla intersection is often reached if there are many people who turn right in relation to those who drive directly. The efficiency of the interface is thought to improve if right-turners are allowed to turn whenever possible.

Arrow light also reduces conflicts between pedestrians and motorists.

“But it is known that this is not an optimal situation that direct drivers can then, as it were, block right-handers. I understand that it can be confusing for the motorist in the back. After all, that motorist may not think that this is an additional service for those who turn right. ”

However, at the design stage, it has been thought that the overall benefit of such additional green is greater than the potential disadvantage.

“But if it turns out that this doesn’t work and that it causes a misunderstanding or maybe even rear-end runs, then it will be changed. The most important thing is that there are no dangerous or accident-prone solutions. ”

However, nothing like this has been carried on Nyberg’s ears in connection with this intersection. He recalls that any feedback is valuable to the city. It provides information about what works and what doesn’t and can be reacted to.

With the contact of Helsingin Sanomat, he also plans to send an employee to the site to check the situation.
