HS Espoo | Paid parking spaces gap in Espoo – Ingenuity flourishes as motorists revolt against parking fees

Previously, Matinkylä was banned by a wide area parking ban, now it is a toll on streetside parking lots.

Guest parking has been in a bad mood by many Matinkylä residents for years. In the past, the wonder was caused by the vastness of the area regional parking ban. When people came to Matinkylä, they did not notice it and received parking fines for their street parking. Then the city of Espoo added hundreds of no-parking signs on the streets.

Five months ago, from May 10th the city made parking chargeable in certain city-owned street parking lots and parking areas in Tapiola, Leppävaara and Matinkylä.

“No situation [vieraspysäköinnin osalta] at least not improved, ”says the Espoo resident Heikki Riste.

He says that he has been trying to influence guest parking in the Matinkylä and Olari areas for a long time.

In Riste’s opinion, things have only changed for the worse. According to Riste, the toll on streetside parking lots has had the effect that, at least in the vicinity of the shopping center Iso Omena, on a street called Rauhalanpuisto, fewer cars are kept in toll booths than before, and on the other hand, own parking spaces are being invented.

A stretch of dirt road leads to a small square that is used as a parking lot. At the bottom of the street there are traffic signs indicating parking fees.

“It did that by not keeping cars on the street. People drive cars in that forest, ”Riste describes on the phone.

According to him, cars are often parked in Rauhalanpuisto on the small side near Outotec’s office and a little further afield.

Let’s take a look!

In October on weekdays, several cars are parked at the end of a bumpy dirt road, as well as one car, van and motorcycle in the woods under the trees just near the Rauhalanpuisto roadside paid parking spaces.

Cars and motorcycles are parked under the trees next to the street called Rauhalanpuisto.

Traffic signs with parking instructions and payment instructions are displayed near the bush parks. Some car is in paid places has been left, but more is empty. When driving forward to Rauhalanpuisto, you will encounter a short stretch of street in Matinkallio, where you can park for free on the disc. There is no room for a car here.

Riste believes that there should be more free puck spaces for guest parking.

“When guests come, you can be told to take the car to the Big Apple.”

Riste points out that not everyone lives in the immediate vicinity of the mall and not all guests can walk the “kilometer shop”.

He says he once joined the Coalition’s local association because of parking issues.

“But nothing can affect it. Politicians are changing. Officials stay and the word of officials is much more important than that of residents or politicians, ”Riste describes.

“New houses and residents are coming all the time. Their guests can’t fit anywhere when the old ones can’t fit. ”

Parking becoming chargeable has also brought problems in Leppävaara, where cars have been left on light traffic lanes or in front of the lower doors of residential buildings. HS reported on the matter in August.

There are also side effects associated with free street parking. It has caused residents to keep their cars on the roadside, leaving streetside spaces not enough for business and guests. In addition, free parking areas may have been used, for example, for winter storage of boats or as landfills for car wrecks. For a fee, there has been a desire for incense.

The current public area parking program is valid in Espoo until the end of 2022.

The land next to Rauhalanpuisto Street is used for parking.
