HS Espoo | “Hävikki was something absolutely incredible” – Espoo gave up renting swimwear in its halls, because the costumes were just being stolen

When Juha Ervola studied at the Leppävaara School of Commerce, he used to sneak into the swimming pool on a whim. The ex tempore trips were successful because swimming trunks could be rented at the Leppävaara swimming pool for an affordable price of three euros.

Now this is no longer possible, because a couple of years ago Espoo decided to stop renting swimwear in all its swimming halls. Towels can still be rented in a few halls, but in the future they may no longer be available.

“It’s sad that in Espoo you can no longer make surprise visits to swimming pools,” says Ervola.

The end of renting in Espoo surprises Ervola, because swimwear is still rented on the Vantaa side, for example.

Espoo the city’s swimming pool specialist Ari Jaakkola says that the reason for ending the rental can be found in the renters.

“The loss was something quite incredible. They didn’t even want to go around the swimsuits twice when they were already stolen.”

The city of Espoo decided to replace the swimwear that can be purchased. The most affordable option was chosen as a swimsuit. Both men’s and women’s outfits are sold at cost price for ten euros.

Despite the higher price, swimwear is now bought twice as much as it used to be rented.

“If before 150-200 pieces of swimwear were rented per year, now 400-500 pieces are bought.”

The popularity of the swimwear for sale surprised the employees, and they have pondered the reason for the phenomenon. Ari Jaakkola thinks that one possible explanation for this is the fear of dirt.

“Perhaps people have had some kind of hygiene fear when it comes to rented pants, although of course they were always washed well after use.

The corona era hardly reduced the fear of bacteria at least. Vice versa.

“It’s better to get new ones from the package than to rent the ones used by someone else.”

Because swimsuits for sale are more popular than those for rent, Espoo is not even considering going back to rental days.

Instead, the fate of the towels is still a bit open. According to Jaakkola, requests for towels are few, only a few dozen times a year.

At the moment, new towels are no longer bought for swimming pools, but some pools still offer old towels.

“We’re monitoring the situation, and we’ll see if we could manage without towels in the future,” says Jaakkola.
