“We here in the church are still waiting and doing our best to make the Christmas churches that are important to us a reality,” the pastor Päivi Linnoinen says.
When the renovation began in the corona spring of 2020, the time for completion of the works was estimated to be October 2021 and the church’s commencement of the first Advent. Back in September, it looked like in Tapiola will be reached at Christmas to the renovated church.
But large-scale renovations often take turns, even now.

The Church & City magazine reported in the past, one of the reasons for the delay in work has been that several of the church’s ceiling installers fell ill as a result of the crown and the roof could therefore not be installed in time.
Due to the delay in the work, the official inspections have also had to be postponed.
The new date for the church’s opening ceremony is currently on the calendar on January 30, but it would be even more important for many to get to the Christmas church.
“Unfortunately, I don’t have new information about schedules,” Linnoinen says.
“Yes, we are looking forward to getting to church there,” says Pastor Linnoinen.
Tapiola Church has been operating in evacuation facilities during the renovation. The church has a space in the center of Tapiola in a former shoe store called Virsu. In addition to this, space has been reserved for the church’s office work from the Mankka building, where the grocery store Lidl operates.
Of course, the premises normally used, ie the Otaniemi Chapel and the Mankkaa Parish Home, have also been used. In addition to these, according to Linnoinen, the work has been done online, partly due to the interest.
Among other things, he talks about a web-based grief group. “It reached a slightly different crowd than the grief groups we have otherwise reached.”
Tapiola Church renovations began in May 2020. Builder is a must. The renovation is planned by AFKS (Architects Frondelius + Keppo + Salmenperä Ltd), Ideastructura and Granlund.
During the renovation, the structures, the building technology and the area of the church have been renewed and refurbished. The maximum cost of the renovation is set at EUR 17.3 million.
The exterior of the church building is protected by a town plan, as is the majority of the interior. Aarno Ruusuvuoren the church was built in 1965. The previous major renovation and extension of the building was done in 1992.
