HS Environment The “deportee patrol” of five young people evicted white-fronted geese from the shores in Lahti: “They are considered to be roughly heroes”

In the spring, the city of Lahti started an innovative experiment in which white-fronted geese are deported from the beaches with the help of remote-controlled robotic planes and walking patrols.

Lahti the city’s pilot project to tackle the white-fronted goose problem seems to be bearing fruit.

“There has been positive feedback from everywhere,” says the father of the project, chairman of the Lahti Building and Environmental Permit Board. Jani Wallenius (kok).

In May, Lahti began deporting white-fronted geese from the beaches with the help of remote-controlled robot planes and walking patrols.

“The deportation is done throughout the day so that the walking patrols start in the morning and the pilots of the planes come in the afternoon,” Wallenius says.

For years, Lahti has been seeking an exemption from the ely center for the expulsion of white-fronted geese from the city’s parks and beaches. However, the white-fronted goose is a species protected by the EU, which is why no deportation permits have been issued.

This spring, however, the ely center outlined that a deportation permit is not required for beaches, as they are not places for birds to eat.

Lahti the basic idea of the project is to teach birds to stay away from public beaches through deportation measures. According to Wallenius, the number of white-fronted geese has decreased considerably from previous summers.

“Each deportee makes a daily report estimating the number of white-fronted geese. Based on them, it can be seen that the number of birds has clearly decreased all the time. ”

In addition, preliminary studies have shown that birds have been effectively conditioned for deportation.

“Young people are roughly heroes among the townspeople as they have emptied the beaches of white-cheeked geese.”

“We’ve noticed that the birds are fleeing just when they see the vested patrols and planes taking off.”

Although the expulsion of geese enjoys widespread acceptance among Lahti residents, the operation has also raised questions about, among other things, the disturbance of the nesting of birds.

Birdlife Executive Director Aki Arkiomaa In April, HS assessed that the use of remotely piloted aircraft to expel white-fronted geese was, in principle, a good method.

Wallenius emphasizes that the aim of the project is to move geese to safer areas so that both humans and geese can live in peace in their own conditions.

“This is not a shooting or execution campaign, and I don’t see why that would be opposed. We have requested and followed Birdlife’s instructions and have done everything in accordance with the laws and regulations. ”

Next The Lahti operation is a bird nesting site. The goal is for the new generation to learn from their parents that public beaches are not desirable places for birds.

However, nesting is a sensitive time for white-fronted geese. Lahti is ready to suspend its expulsion project if nesting is disrupted.

“If the planes cause a panic reaction in the parents and the chicks are left alone on the beach, we will suspend the deportation immediately,” Wallenius says.

Päijät-Häme An innovative project funded by the Finnish Association and the City of Lahti is being implemented by the youth action group Inspis. Expulsion work currently employs five young people.

“After all, young people are roughly heroes among the townspeople after they’ve emptied the beaches of white-fronted geese.”

The final results of the experiment in the city of Lahti will be published in October.
