HS analysis Kurvinen’s actions again revealed tensions in the government: in the center the minister is considered outspoken, in the ranks of the SDP the behavior appears as a publicity campaign

It is said of Kurvinen’s background forces that the minister is a cross-stack man who does not hide behind his administration but tells the nasty news himself, writes Juha-Pekka Raeste, HS’s financial journalist.

Prime minister Sanna Marin (sd) managed to maintain his composure in a sudden press conference in the corridor of the Government Castle late Friday night.

He said the government had found a solution to cancel the planned cuts for Veikkaus’ beneficiary organizations 100%.

In terms of body language, it was seen that the past week and the pre-press conference of the chairmen of the governing parties, the five, had tested the Prime Minister, even though Marin still answered the media questions “machine-orthodoxly”.

When Sanna Marini, for example, was asked why the Minister of Science and Culture of the city center Antti Kurvinen (center) “thrown under the bus”, Marin himself replied that he considered it important that the outcome of the negotiations had been achieved and that a solution had been found.

Asked what kind of gaps Marin and Minister Kurvinen have now, Marin ignored, commenting that “the prime minister and government ministers have working gaps”.

In the background was Marin ‘s public statement during the week of confusion that, contrary to the prime minister’ s request, Kurvinen had held a press conference on the cuts by Veikkaus ‘beneficiaries, even though Kurvinen knew at the time that the matter would be decided later in the government’ s top five.

When asked, Minister Kurvinen did not agree to evaluate Marin’s activities afterwards.

“The most important thing for me is that we now got a solution,” Marin circled the question.

“As early as last week, it was clear to myself that we were coming to this situation of beneficiaries and looking for a solution to the financial situation, because it was clear that these financial cuts were leading to an unreasonable situation,” he continued.

When Marin was asked if he had any message to the center about the government’s actions after the public scandal given to Minister Kurvis, the answer was scant.

“I’m not going to open the discussions of the five to open it up.”

Prime Minister Sanna Marin at a press conference on Friday.

Marin stated that he had been very sorry for a week that the list published by Kurvinen had caused uncertainty for the cultural field and also for other organizations and actors.

“Personally, I would have liked to have gone through this whole thing together first, looked for a negotiated solution, talked about it together and then maybe we would have avoided this kind of confusion like this week has been, but now we have to look ahead,” Marin said.

But what was agreed at the pentathlon on Friday? And was there talk of why this government must always find its solution, as if through the most difficult?

As for the demar camp, the five-week consultation began on Friday at four, and the solution was ready with relative ease as early as eight.

As a result of the merger of different parts of Veikkaus, the gaming company had a reserve fund of more than one hundred million euros transferred to state funds due to different revenue recognition practices.

The remaining EUR 47 million was found in the unallocated provisions of the framework.

In this way, the problem was solved relatively simply within the budget frameworks without incurring additional debt.

Left Alliance had first announced three weeks earlier that it would bring its euro-denominated proposal to the government, demanding the cancellation of budget cuts for cultural beneficiaries.

Even then, in the SDP’s view, it was clear that the city center had to understand that the matter would be transferred to the top five.

In the SDP, Kurvinen’s work was seen as a kind of publicity campaign for the city center.

According to central sources, Antti Kurvinen saw the matter differently.

For him, the budget entry was binding, some of the cuts had already leaked to the organizations and a request for information had been made from Parliament about the cut list, ie it was coming to light anyway.

Then the straight-backed and stacked man does not hide behind his administration but tells the nasty news at the press conference itself, Kurvinen’s background troops are told.

Minister of Science and Culture Antti Kurvinen met with the media in Helsinki on 12 October.

In Sdp However, Kurvinen’s work was seen as a kind of publicity campaign for the city center.

“The center is like a clan that doesn’t have such a unifying line. Things are looked at through individual wins, kicked in the ankles, ”one Demari describes the key tensions in the government.

However, according to HS sources, the overthrow of the government was not on the table.

“What good would it do us to weaken Marin’s position,” the government’s central source responds to the criticism.

According to him, the center wants to ensure that the government is able to make even difficult cuts.

On Friday in the five-year negotiations, the starting point was the premise put forward by the left-wing alliance that at least the cuts to cultural actors would have been revoked in the first instance.

After that, the cuts in sport and youth work would have been dealt with as a supplement to the budget.

However, during the discussions, it quickly became clear to everyone that the delay in the settlement of sport and youth would trigger the next political cry.

Therefore, it was decided to deal with the matter with a one-off push, when the funds were found.

“It was important for us that a solution was found within the framework,” the RKP President, Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson says.

According to him, the solution was surprisingly easy to find in the end.

According to Henriksson, the RKP considers it important that the framework is not slipped and that employment decisions of EUR 110 million are taken as agreed in February.

Psychologically it was a surprise to some members of the five that Minister Kurvinen had on Tuesday morning refused to comply with the Prime Minister’s request to cancel the press conference.

“I would listen and say it fits. That should not be a question of prestige. We have a prime minister who leads the government’s policy, ”one one who followed the five-day meeting commented to HS.

It is easy to find other reasons for Kurvinen’s resistance. Young politicians are often in a hurry to show off their lion claws, and Sanna Marini’s rapid movements as a builder of her own personal brand can haunt her.

When support leaks to opposition parties, it may make sense to be in government as a rivalry.

It also appears that the Center has still not adapted to be the second largest party in government.

“For a long time, it has felt like the government is doing better. But one or two returned to the mood of spring, ”a government source says.

Government however, according to HS sources, the crash was not present.

“I didn’t see it as very dramatic,” one source who followed the discussions says.

“On behalf of the case, this could have gone in the normal process.”
