Donald Trump’s victory in the United States presidential election marks an important turning point, not only for the global geopolitical situation, but also for the status of OnlyFans creators, porn stars, strippers and similar in that country.
This issue gained relevance from some anti-pornography bills presented weeks before the elections by Republicans in Project 2025.a document written to outline the political actions of the second term. And now that Trump has been elected, what were mere proposals could become reality.
Does Onlyfans run the risk of being banned?
“Pornography should be condemned. The people who produce and distribute it should be arrested,” reads the text of Project 2025, which suggests that pornography is “as addictive as any other illicit drug.” Strong statements, which could lead to the prohibition of explicit content, considered by the majority of sex workers as the only possible source of income. On the other hand, in recent years the life of Onlyfans creators has not been easy because of the ideas spread by Republicans: they are banned from social media platforms for publishing content that does not comply with their guidelines, They suffer from unjustified dismissals at their workplaces or are prevented from opening bank accounts.
In 2018, the status of sex workers was shattered when Trump signed the FOSTA-SESTA law, which made websites responsible for the ads published by their users. This decision led the platforms used by the creators to eliminate many of the contents, not only making the work of sex workers impossible, but also pushing them towards the dangers of working outside of digital reality. Over the years, the situation has only worsened, revealing the intentions of Republican supporters to crack down on adult content and crack down on sexual and gender freedom.
“It’s a way into a kind of broader censorship program. They believe that pornography, LGBTQI+ rights and female sexuality are all related. And if they can weaken our right to talk about these things, they can do whatever they want in general. Even making it illegal,” he told Vice Mike Stabile, a documentary filmmaker known for his work in the pornographic film industry. Precisely for this reason, Trump’s victory could represent the epilogue of the activity of many creators, who fear that the new president will ban pornography and make their work illegal.
