While the first beta of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 is only available in the US, that’s actually not the case. Getting access in other countries is surprisingly easy. Apple chose to limit access to a single language initially to simplify the process, but if you’re willing to live with that limitation, you can still use Apple Intelligence, the AI system that’s coming to the next iPhone operating system. It’s important to note that you’ll need a compatible device, which means an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, or an iPad with an M1 chip or better.
Regardless of which country you are in, the first steps are the same. You need to install the iOS 18.1 developer beta. To do this, you need to join the developer program; you don’t need a paid developer account. Use your Apple ID credentials on developer.apple.com to sign up. Then, open the Settings app and go to General > Software Update. Tap the Beta Updates button and select iOS 18.1 Developer Beta. Download and install the iOS 18.1 update.
For those outside the US, there are a few additional steps to take, first setting up your language and region. Go to Settings > Language & Region. Tap Language and select English (US). Next to Region, change it to United States. To set up Apple Intelligence and Siri, go back to the main menu and select Apple Intelligence & Siri. Change the Language to English (US). Change the Voice to one of the US options and wait for it to download, then restart your iPhone.
These steps should work in most countries, although in EU countries the results are variable, and it is advisable to try multiple times. Some devices may not work, or may work intermittently. If you want to use a VPN to set the region to the US, Apple can detect this setting if done directly on the phone, so you will need a wireless router capable of VPN access.
Once you have completed the steps above, continue as if you were in the United States. Below the Apple Intelligence & Siri text, you should see an option to join the waitlist. Tap on it and it will change to “Joined Waitlist”. Activation usually takes a few minutes. Once activated, the message will change to “Turn On Apple Intelligence”. Tap this message and you will receive a welcome message. This will allow you to start using Apple Intelligence even outside the United States.
