To understand what a VPN is, it is sufficient to analyze the acronym: Virtual Private Network, or virtual private network. It is therefore a network that allows the person who uses it to protect their privacy, hiding the IP address and adding security especially if you browse using public wifi networks.
The mechanism is simple: using a VPN server, it decrypts the information and sends it to the destination server, hiding your IP address; or rather, it will appear that the user’s IP address is that of the VPN server through which you sent the data.
The quickest method, if you need to use it often, is to do the download a VPN: in this way the app you downloaded will start automatically every time you access the browser and connect to the internet, masking your information. Every time you connect to a public wifi you will not have to remember to activate the VPN, as the software has already done it automatically.
Why do i need a VPN?
We understand that the main reason is that of security, especially if you often use public wifi networks, such as that of your university or the bar where you stop for lunch. It’s all too easy to track your activity, but thanks to VPN your browser history, saved passwords and all your personal information are safe.
Aside from the “security” section, know that that’s not the only reason you might find it useful to download a VPN. I guess you have happened to go to YouTube and not be able to watch a video because “it is not available for your country”. By masking your IP you can make believe that you are connecting from the USA instead of Italy, therefore with free access to the videos that interest you. In Italy we do not have censorship, but think of those states where several sites are not accessible precisely because of the censorship made by the government … you will understand that using a VPN in those cases takes on a totally different importance.
As a last point I add that it adapts to many devices, from mobile phones, to desktop computers, to laptops to tablets: wherever you want to surf you will have no problems.
But are they all roses and flowers?
Of course not, there are other things to watch out for. If you use a VPN to access sites that are otherwise blocked for your IP, the functionality is great, but there are other things to watch out for in terms of security. For example, the cookies that are saved on your computer, as they will continue to send information to the site that generated them even after you have disconnected the VPN. Furthermore, if you use third-party applications they may not even know which IP you are acting from, but if you are logged into Facebook it will know exactly who you are and what you do whatever IP you use.
In short, the problem of security while browsing, and especially privacy, is something much more complex, but having a VPN available that is activated every time we browse is certainly something that gives us a little more privacy. It is convenient that the sites we browse sometimes know exactly what we are looking for thanks to the study of our habits and the history of the searches we do, but we are careful to the extent to which this information can reach.
