Panic crises present themselves with a double symptomatology: psychic and physical.
Typically the first panic attack comes unexpectedly, like a “bolt from the blue”. The person begins to feel a physical discomfort: tachycardia, chest pain, sweating, feeling of suffocation, then begins to perceive a state of strong apprehension that quickly turns into fear and then into real panic. When you get to this point you begin to fear for your physical safety: you think of a heart attack, a stroke or any other serious physical problem.
In its physiological component, the panic attack can be considered as a “blank shot” of the “fight-flight reaction”: An automatic neuro-motor mechanism that serves the human being to increase the chances of saving his life in moments of real danger of death, as if we were faced with a bull that is charging. Panic attacks are false alarms which occur when the “sensor” of the fight-flight response is too sensitive and does not reflect real dangers.
