The potato omelette is one of the great dishes of Spanish cuisine. Spanish gastronomy is known for its high quality, but if there is a famous product throughout the world with the seal of Spain, it is the potato omelette. For many it is one of the essential dishes in the diet. In addition, the omelette is very easy to prepare and can save you on any occasion when you don’t know what to prepare and you have guests at home.
There are tortillas of all tastes, there are those who prefer it with onion and those who are from the ‘team’ without onion. What is certain is that this dish cannot be missing in any restaurant in Spain. Although it is a simple traditional dish to prepare, more than one has to resort to the prepared tortillas that are sold in supermarkets. The stress of day to day can mean that you have no choice but to take something prepared from the supermarket because you don’t have time to prepare tomorrow’s food. For this reason, many resort to prepared food and, specifically, more than one can affirm that they have tried one of the prepared tortillas sold in stores.
Those who have to resort to this food very often should know that there are prepared tortillas that are of higher quality than others. The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has carried out an analysis and explains what consumers should take into account when buying a prepared potato omelette.
According to the OCU, two characteristics differentiate prepared tortillas from homemade ones: additives and flavor. The additives are necessary in the refrigerated prepared tortillas (not so in the analyzed frozen tortilla that does not need them) to give them texture and avoid hygiene problems. As for the flavor, they can still improve a lot to reach the juiciness and original flavor of a homemade tortilla, but there are very successful ones.
What should you take into account to buy a prepared tortilla
According to the OCU, there are many tortillas to choose from in a market dominated by the distribution brand (white label), where Hacendado de Mercadona and the Palacios brand stand out.
– In the nutritional aspect, the organization points out that they have not found a high fat, sugar or salt content. Regarding its energy value, in the analyzes ‘La Cocina de Aldi’ stands out with free-range eggs and caramelized onion, for having less caloric values; the highest are those of Auchan; the one with the most salt is Fuentetaja (1.3%) and the one with the least, Palacios (0.57%).
– According to the OCU’s collection of information, the expert chefs highlighted that in the tortillas finished in a frying pan, the potato was much more whole and so was the onion.
– The opinion of the cooks is that, in general, the prepared tortillas are not very juicy products; they look more like compact blocks where the potato and onion are harder and the egg is excessively curdled.
– Regarding tasting, the brand La Cocina de Senén stands out, but it must be taken into account that it is a very different tortilla from the rest and is not comparable. It is a frozen product, which looks like a large jelly filled with potato, onion and raw egg, and it is recommended to finish exclusively in a pan. By putting it on the fire, the egg curdles while the gelatin melts and maintains its shape. The result is a juicy tortilla, with a poached potato, with a pleasant texture.
The best packaged tortillas, according to the OCU
Of the potato tortillas analyzed by the OCU, the organization highlights two above the rest:
– ‘La Cocina de Senén’, it is a frozen tortilla, very different, it cannot be compared to the rest, but it is very well valued in the tasting.
– The Aldi refrigerated tortilla with caramelized onion and free-range eggs, according to the OCU, the best refrigerated tortilla.
