This tool is used as a GPS that helps you reach the indicated destination, but it also has other functions
The Google Maps tool brings together a large number of tasks. It is mainly used as a GPS that helps you reach the indicated destination, but it can also notify you when there are radars or accidents nearby, since both situations influence the driving of citizens. If you go on vacation with your car, the last thing you want is to find yourself stuck on the road for a long time due to an accident.
This tool is very useful if you are traveling to a place for the first time, since it offers you a detailed map of the streets. One of the main functions of Google Maps is to guide you to the destination you want to reach, but it can also help you avoid the area where an accident has occurred thanks to its warnings. Therefore, you can take advantage of the option offered by Google Maps and activate radar and accident warnings.
How to activate a traffic layer
In order for Google Maps to send you traffic alerts, you must activate one of the layers of the platform, regardless of whether you have started the navigation route. Select the ‘layers’ button at the top right. Then select ‘Map details’. Then press ‘Traffic’ and the layer that shows the state of the roads on which you can circulate will be activated.
There is a color code for traffic that works like this: in green you can see the roads where the traffic is fluid; in yellow those where there is more traffic; in orange those that become dense; and in light red or burgundy, those roads where there is moderate or advancing traffic jams. If the road appears in a burgundy tone, you should bear in mind that these are considerable traffic jams, which could delay your route for a long time.
Incident alerts
Google Maps allows you to check if there are incidents or closed roads. This information will appear exclusively when you are in the ‘Navigation’ mode of Google Maps, as is the case of accidents or speed cameras on the roads. Other data such as road closures can be seen by searching directly on the map.
The Google Maps system to activate alerts in the event of this type of incident is based on what users report, being very reliable information. If you verify that the application shows you that there is an accident or a closed street on your route and when you pass you discover that it is a lie, you must notify it to help other users.
How to activate the speed camera warning
If you want to activate the radar alerts on the map, you must do it from the ‘Navigation’ mode. When you select ‘Start a route’ and you’re on your way, you can see colored speed camera icons on the map, with fixed speed cameras being orange and mobile speed cameras blue. Fixed speed cameras always show up on Google, even when users don’t create tickets. This does not happen with mobile radars, since they are in constant motion.
You can consult this information before starting the route. When you have chosen your destination, before selecting ‘Start’, slide the screen up and you will see possible incidents: the point where there is an accident, works, etc. This way you will know what you can find on your trip.
How to record incidents
You can report different types of incident on Google Maps: collision, mobile radar, retention, vehicle accident, etc. If you’re a passenger, you can warn the application while driving and other drivers using Google Maps will see a warning right in the area where it has been notified. If you follow these steps you can report an incident:
1. Access Google Maps.
2. Start a route to the destination you want.
3. Open the app’s ‘browse’ mode.
4. When you’re on the road, look for the speech bubble button.
5. Choose the type of incident from the seven available.
6. It will automatically be added on the map.
7. Once added, you will see the corresponding icon at that point on the map.
8. You have a few seconds to hit ‘Undo’ if you’ve made a mistake.
