In athletics, each gold will mean a prize of $50,000 for the winner in the individual competition. In relays, the money will be the same, but distributed among the team members.
“The introduction of prize money for Olympic gold medalists is a pivotal moment for World Athletics and athletics as a whole, underlining our commitment to empowering athletes and recognizing the vital role they play in the success of any Olympic event.” said Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics.
He added: “This is the continuation of a journey we started in 2015, in which all the money that World Athletics receives from the International Olympic Committee for the Games goes directly back into our sport.”
