Carlo Ancelotti will once again lead Real Madrid in a derby against Atleti, a rival that in part brings back very good memories but has not been exactly good at the Italian coach. During his first two seasons on the white bench, Ancelotti faced Atlético de Madrid 13 times in all competitions and has only achieved three victories.
In LaLiga, Ancelotti still doesn’t know what it’s like to beat Atleti. Of the four times the rojiblancos have met, they have won three times (0-1, 1-2 and 4-0) and the other ended in a draw (2-2).
In Copa del Rey they met in the semifinals of the 2013/2014 season and things went well for the Italian. In the first leg they won 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu and in the second leg at the Calderón they also won 0-2.
The following season they repeated their confrontation, this time in the second round, and Atleti took revenge on their rival. The first leg ended with a red-and-white victory (2-0) and the second leg ended with a draw (2-2) that left the Whites out of the competition.
In the Spanish Super Cup they met in 2014 in a roundtrip final. The match at the Bernabéu ended in a draw (1-1) and the return at the Calderón 1-0 in favor of the rojiblancos who won the title.
And it is in the Champions League that Ancelotti achieved his great success. In the 2013/2014 season, Real Madrid were proclaimed European champions with that agonizing goal by Sergio Ramos in the 93rd minute that forced extra time. Already in the extra 30 minutes, Madrid scored three more goals to sentence the final (4-1).
In their second and final season, the two Madrid teams met again in the Champions League, in the quarterfinal, and again it was Madrid who took the lead. The first leg ended in a goalless draw (0-0) and in the return leg Carletto’s team won 1-0, thus going to the semi-final.
Lights and shadows in the history of Carlo Ancelotti against Atlético de Madrid who will seek his first league victory in the derby tomorrow.
