The Yemeni Houthi militia is offering places at Saana University to any student suspended over protests in the United States against Israel, an official revealed to Reuters agency this Friday (3) in a message issued by leaders of the group, which controls the capital of Yemen.
“We are serious about welcoming students who have been suspended from US universities for supporting Palestinians. We are fighting this battle with Palestine in every way we can,” the source said.
Sanaa University itself issued an official statement condemning police actions aimed at stopping student uprisings in the US and the UK. “The university council condemns what academics and students at US and European universities are being subjected to, the suppression of freedom of expression,” read the note, which included an email address for any student who wished to continue the studies in Yemen.
In January, the Houthi rebels were once again classified as terrorists by the US and the UK. The group is part of the Axis of Resistance, an informal military alliance led by Iran in the Middle East, whose background is the destruction of Israel.
Since last year, the militia has caused economic disruption to several countries by blocking important global maritime routes, justifying their actions as support for the Palestinians in Gaza.
