Yemen’s Houthi rebels have reported that in recent hours they have carried out a missile and drone attack against a US Navy aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, as well as against two other US destroyers in Red Sea waters.
As detailed by the Houthi military operations spokesman, Yahya Sari, the aircraft carrier ‘USS Abraham Lincoln’ was attacked when “the American enemy was preparing to carry out hostile operations» against Yemeni territory, which have finally been thwarted.
On the other hand, the Houthis have carried out an attack against two destroyers Americans in the Red Sea with missiles and drones. “The operation has successfully achieved its objectives,” added Sari, who highlighted that the attacks were part of an operation that lasted eight hours.
Thus, the Yemeni rebels have taken advantage of the occasion to reiterate their criticism of the United States and the United Kingdom, powers that they accuse of turning the Red Sea region into “a zone of military tension”», as well as the consequences that this has for maritime navigation in the area.
The Houthis have stressed that any attack on Yemen will only cause the insurgents to use their “legitimate right to defend oneself, confront and attack any hostile threat in the Red and Arabian Seas” and in any other area within reach of Yemeni weapons.
Washington has no record
Following this claim, the spokesman for the US Department of Defense, Patrick Ryder, confirmed in a press conference that two destroyers were attacked this Monday, without any damage being reported, although he indicated that he has no evidence that the aircraft carrier ‘USS Abraham Lincoln’ was attacked.
Ryder has indicated that “on November 11, the forces of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) r“They successfully repelled multiple Houthi attacks.” when their ships were transiting the Strait of Bab el Mandeb. Then, the destroyers ‘USS Stockdale’ and ‘USS Spruance’ were attacked by eight one-way attack drones, five anti-ship ballistic missiles and three anti-ship cruise missiles.
«The ships were not damaged and no staff member was injured,” the spokesperson said, before noting that CENTCOM “reserves the inherent right of self-defense” and “will take appropriate measures to protect” its personnel.
Entrenched conflict
The Houthis, who have controlled the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and other areas of the north and west of the country since 2015, have launched several attacks against Israeli territory and against ships with some type of Israeli connection as a result of the offensive launched against Gaza after the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023.
Likewise, Yemeni insurgents have attacked US and British ships and drones in response to these countries’ bombing of Yemen. Washington and London say they are acting to defend free navigation in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
