A “House of the dragon” was enough for a single chapter for HBO Max to announce a second season. With the Targaryen house as the protagonist, more than one expected to see the beginnings of this complicated, but powerful family. With Viserys I announcing that Rhaenyra will be his heir, the game for the throne has begun.
In chapter 2 of “The house of the dragon”, we witness how the search for the iron throne will lead to the formation of dangerous alliances. So too, we see how Otto Hightower pulls his strings to get what he so longs for: power.
Hightower tells the king that Rhaenyra can select the newest member of the King’s Guard, after she announces that it is time to send the dragons to see what happens at the Stone Steps. “It would be a show of strength, father,” the princess said before leaving the room.
With more than one applicant, Rhaenyra accepts Ser Criston Colethe only one with combat experience and who previously defeated Daemon Targaryen.
Later on, we see how Viserys I and Alicent Hightower’s relationship continues to deepen. As they talk, he asks her how her daughter is dealing with the death of her mother, to which the young woman replies that he should talk to her more.
A Wife for the King: Corlys Velaryon’s Proposal
Perhaps one of the most commented moments of the chapter. In a talk between Corlys Velaryon, Rhaenys Targaryen and Viserys I, ‘The Sea Serpent’ offers the king his daughter Laena in marriage, with the intention of uniting the Valyrian bloods of Targaryen and Velaryon.
The one who opposes this is Rhaenyra, who berates her aunt for giving up her daughter. In response, Rhaenys reminds her that her father will eventually remarry and by having a son he will be named her heir and she will lose her title. “When I am queen I will change the order of things,” the princess replies.
Daemon Returns: The Robbery at King’s Landing
In a later scene, we see that Viserys is warned of the return of Daemon, who returned to King’s Landing and stole the dragon egg that was meant for Baelon. Also, it is announced that the prince declared himself legitimate heir and that the egg will be placed in the cradle of his future heir, which he says he will have with Mysaria.
After the king agrees to talk to his brother, Otto Hightower offers to go negotiate with Daemon on Dragonstone. He does not arrive alone, for he shows up with a detachment of soldiers. Determined to retrieve the egg, he confronts the prince.
Without giving it much importance, Daegon knows that Hightower wants to consecrate himself with his brother, so he pushes The Hand of the King to the limit. When they are about to fight, Caraxe, Daegon’s mighty dragon, arrives.
Without imagining what could happen, Rhaenyra arrives at Dragonstone on Syrax. With Otto admonishing her for approaching the place, the princess replies that she is there to prevent a tragedy.
“To regain your inheritance (the throne) you must kill me. Do it and let’s get this over with,” Rhaenyra scolds her uncle Daemon. Without another word, the man hands him the dragon egg and returns to his lair. Shocked by the action of the princess, Otto does not see with good eyes the power that she has.
Alicent Hightower will marry King Viserys I
In the final part of “House of the dragon” chapter 2, we see the king debating whether or not he should marry Laena. While this is happening, Rhaenyra returns from King’s landing, and the king criticizes her for acting without her permission. After talking about her, Viserys tells her that he is getting married and she agrees.
The next day, before the council, the king announces that he will marry Alicent Hightower, much to the annoyance of Lord Corlys and the happiness of Otto. Rhaenyra, close to tears, leaves the room.
The Velaryon and Targaryen alliance: a game for the throne
Before closing the episode, we see Ser Corlys convincing Daemon Targaryen to prove himself to the king by going after ‘He Feeds Crabs’ on the Stepstones, an individual supported by men who want to see a weak Westeros.
