“We thought it was a joke, now we’re in shock.” This is how some tourists describe the experience they had while visiting a zoo in Jamaica: a keeper was seen taking a finger off a lion while the visitors were filming it all. The facts occurred in a few moments during a visit to the Jamaica Zoo, a facility located in Lacovia, in the Burton district.
The man who was accompanying them on the tour at one point finds himself in front of the cage where there are two African lions. Both animals, given the conditions in which they find themselves, seem to be visibly annoyed by tourists. But the guide decides to get closer and teases them by approaching the net and touching it with his hands. Then he isolates one and pushes them further with the other: he sticks his fingers through the holes in the net, repeatedly touching his nose and putting them in his mouth. He does not understand, perhaps to tease him so that the animal responds with the roars that visitors expect to be able to film.
The lion then approaches the net and tries to grab the guide’s fingers. But he doesn’t stop repeating that really dangerous gesture, showing either too much confidence or total ignorance of what he is doing. A few moments later the lion bites his finger. The man starts screaming, but no one comes to his aid to try to distract the feline. Indeed, everyone remains with their cell phones pointed at the scene to film it. Some of the witnesses will say that at first they thought it was a joke and only when the man fell to the ground with his bloody hand did they realize what really happened. The guide then got into a car and was taken to hospital where he was found to have lost a finger and some patches of skin.
The video posted on Twitter then went viral, sparking protests from animal rights activists who judge the behavior of the guide as disrespectful to animals already unjustly detained in a cage. Faced with the many controversies that have appeared on social media, the managers of the Jamaica Zoo have issued a press release where they describe what happened as “horrible” and distance themselves from the guide: in the note they explain that the man in the video “is not an employee of theirs, but an outsider “and they clarify that what they saw in the clip” does not represent the procedures and security policies that must always be respected in the structure. The zoo is a safe place for everyone ».
However, the controversy has not subsided as it had already happened in the past: in a video on Youtube, dated 2016, you can see a man who, always in front of tourists, adults and children, smiling, annoys a lion “forcing” it to roar. And among the many indignant comments of six years ago, one comes up a few days ago: «The lion has finally obtained his revenge. I found this video after seeing the other one on Facebook where the lion eats a tour guide’s finger by pulling off his tendons. And it happened in this zoo ».
