The starting grid of the Japanese Grand Prix will see Max Verstappen in the role of poleman for the fifth time this season, all despite some ‘risks’ taken on and off the track: the Dutchman, in addition to having avoided a penalty for the maneuver performed in the final minutes of the session (when, in warming up the tires, came close to a dangerous contact with Lando Norris) achieved the best time by just 10 thousandths of an advantage from Ferrari’s Charles Leclercand at 57 from the other Rossa di Carlos Sainz. A minimum gap, as opposed to that established on your teammate Sergio Perez, fourth and 4 tenths away from the one who could be crowned world champion in this GP. Qualifying therefore underlined the potential of Ferrari, even if the composition of the first two rows of the grid does not seem to arouse too many concerns in the Red Bull team principal: Christian Horner.
The English manager, in fact, has good expectations for Sunday’s race, especially as regards the possible comeback of Sergio Perez. While Verstappen would maintain his leadership over Leclerc and Sainz, the latter could be in the crosshairs of the Mexican, who according to Horner, generally expresses the maximum of his repertoire right in the race: “Sergio starts from the second row, and usually, in the race it is always better than in qualifying – said Horner – so we are curious to see what he will be able to do in the GP. Changing conditions could work in his favor, and I think he will have a say at the top. We have two Ferraris in a Red Bull sandwich“.
