Before the definitive explosion of Max Verstappen in 2021, the history of the Red Bull had known only one driver capable of winning the world title at the wheel of the Anglo-Austrian car: Sebastian Vettel. The German, winner of four consecutive world championships between 2010 and 2013, and who contributed to the team’s successes in the same constructors’ championships, is now in the process of retiring from Formula 1 following the announcement made in Hungary.
After a career that began in 2007 at BMW, the current Aston Martin driver will hang up his helmet at the end of the season, automatically ending a recent stint with results. Even before moving to the English team, Vettel was in fact returning from some lackluster seasons in Ferrariwith which he nevertheless came close to winning the title in 2017 and 2018 before a slump in performance fueled also by a performance crisis in the Maranello team.
Consequently, Vettel has therefore been away from victory for some years now – more precisely from 2o19 – and this saddens his former team principal at Red Bull, Christian Horner. The British manager described his point of view on the current state of the German champion, while recalling the golden years they lived together: “I’m sure he will continue to do great things – he has declared – even if it will be sad not to see him around. I think the time has come for him to say ‘enough’; it’s not nice to see him fight in the middle of the group, he doesn’t deserve to be there. During the time he was with us, it was incredible. He arrived as a junior, and you could see from the beginning that he was a very concentrated young man, with a totally Germanic work ethic. He worked hard, late, and had a great sense of humor. He has been appreciated in all areas of the company, whether he shows up with chocolates for the secretaries or he learns the lingo in the shop. He was very focused not only on successes, but also on records to be achieved or set. They meant a lot to him ”.
