Through a short video and an official post on PlayStation Blog, Guerrilla shows off Aloy’s new abilities within Horizon Forbidden West, which will allow you to traverse the map more smoothly. It will be possible to move much more freely within the new landscapes of the Forbidden West, according to the developers.
While the release was officially postponed during the last Gamescom, the development team reveals the new abilities that will allow Aloy to move around the scenarios, thanks to changes and new mechanics. David McMullen, chief systems designer at Guerrilla, describes exactly the new features.
Based on the experience given by the previous game, this new chapter is much more dynamic and fluid, as also underlined by the chief designer himself:
Using Horizon Zero Dawn as a starting point, we have added new ways to move around the game world. Aloy can freely climb large stretches of rocky terrain; it is possible to ride a greater number of Machines; the hooks that can be hooked up with the grapple increase the verticality of the scenarios; the possibility of swimming opens up a new dimension of exploration; gliding with the alascudo you can admire the world of Horizon Forbidden West from above in all its beauty… or swoop down from dizzying heights!
The new mechanics were also a new challenge from the point of view of development, which has also led to interesting developments for puzzles. Precisely about this component, these are his words:
All of these new options have posed challenges in terms of level design. We want players to amaze us by using new moves or tools to overcome our challenges in an intelligent and unpredictable way. Often these environmental puzzles have multiple possible solutions – we encourage players to experiment and have fun with the new tools. We offer a wide range of challenges regardless of play style, skill level or previous experience in Horizon Zero Dawn.

The title was developed for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, with some important innovations just for the new console, especially concerning the integration with the DualSense controller, one of Sony’s strengths.
The DualSense wireless controller is enhanced in many of our mechanics. For example, we hear the scrape of a box as we push it, or the grapple cord that uncoils quickly… with the adaptive trigger that faithfully simulates the level of tension! We have also added tactile sensations that increase both the value of the gameplay and the involvement in the world of Aloy. They may be barely noticeable, such as the impression of hearing the rustle of grass when hiding in vegetation, or the snap of the adaptive trigger when the bow reaches its maximum tension. Even the absence of adaptive voltage has the function of communicating the lack of ammunition.
Aloy’s new skills are hence an important new component of Horizon Forbidden West, whose release is scheduled for February 18, 2022.
