Sidewalk encampments where homeless people lived in San Francisco have begun to be cleared by authorities following a ruling issued by the Supreme Court this summer validating measures against such settlements. Residents of tents and makeshift structures on the streets in the city have dropped to fewer than 3,000, the lowest number in a decade.
In contrast to these numbers, the percentage of homeless people has risen 7% in the last two years, but has receded from the public eye with the restrictions implemented by Mayor London Breed. Local police have issued 140 citations for illegal encampments since August, hoping to relocate people in need to structured temporary shelters, such as the Mission Cabins project.
Unlike other shelters, this emergency shelter offers privacy benefits and allows residents to have pets. Outside visitors, drugs or weapons are not allowed and residents have to give their consent for inspections of their rooms.
