“Esther Bejarano survived Auschwitz because she played the accordion in the camp orchestra. She has dedicated her life to music and the fight against racism and anti-Semitism. She died tonight at the age of 97, ”Mendel wrote. Even if the 45-year-old states the age of Bejarano at 97, the Holocaust survivor would not have celebrated her 97th birthday until December, according to consistent information. Esther Bejarano was born in Saarlouis in 1924 and deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1943 at the age of 18 before she was transferred to the Ravensbrück concentration camp at the end of the year. Bejarano’s parents and one of their sisters were murdered by the Nazis. After the end of the Second World War, she emigrated to Palestine before returning to Germany in the 1960s and settling in Hamburg. The 96-year-old died there on Saturday.
