The Dutch hockey players took the full loot in the opening weekend of the World Cup. Last night Ireland went over the knee 5-1 and tonight they won 3-1 against Germany. Orange has therefore successfully passed the showdown. The quarterfinals are almost impossible to miss, although there is plenty of work to be done.

After the win against Ireland, interim national team coach Jamilon Mülders said he was looking forward to seeing his old team again. He led the German hockey players for five years and won bronze at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. ,,This is by far the strongest team in our group. I see Germany as a candidate for the semi-finals and maybe a medal.”
A serious showdown for the hockey players, who could immediately see where they stood. In the hundredth international match of Frédérique Matla, who was invisible himself, they started strongly in the second group match, with opportunities for Maria Verschoor, a tip-in from Lidewij Welten and a hard shot by Felice Albers that went wide. Just in a lesser period, Marloes Keetels opened the score with a drum goal: 0-1. Laurien Leurink then got the chance to double the lead, but the attacker who was completely free didn’t even shoot between the posts.
Two goals in two minutes
The Netherlands did not play better, but became more sloppy. Although Germany could not take advantage of that. Lena Michele had a great chance from the tip-in, but her bet went wide. Even after the break it didn’t look much better, just like against the Irish. In the end, the hockey players made the difference in the fourth quarter, thanks to Freeke Moes (0-2) and Maria Verschoor (0-3) who scored within two minutes of each other.
Germany tried to force something, but eventually lacked the punch in the front – even when the goalkeeper was substituted for an extra player. Although the ‘home team’ still scored via a striking penalty corner variant by Nike Lorenz: 1-3. For example, the Netherlands also won the second group match without playing big.
cross final
It must be strange if the team of interim national coach Jamilon Mülders does not want to reach the quarterfinals directly – with a second place there is a cross final on Saturday 9 July. Wednesday (19.30) the third group match with Chile, the weakest opponent on paper, follows. In the case of a defeat of the hockey players and a victory of Germany over Ireland, the number of victories (which is then equal) is first looked at and then the goal difference. That speaks far in Dutch favor (+7 at +1). The quarterfinals are therefore within reach.
