Hockey Jere Lehtinen commented to IS on the missing Olympic team player: “We decided not to invite him to this event”

Rasmus Ristolainen was not invited to the Lions NHL players’ summer meeting in Vanajanlinna.

In winter The Finnish men’s hockey national team, which is preparing for the Olympic hockey, will meet next week for its first meeting for NHL players in the season starting on August 4 in Vanajanlinna.

The coaching of the national team has invited a total of 44 Finnish NHL players to the meeting. Among those not invited were mostly young players who have not been able to establish themselves in the NHL.

However, one uninvited name, a 26-year-old defender star who moved to Philadelphia Flyers in a barter, attracted attention. Rasmus Ristolainen.

Lions general manager Jere Lehtinen told Ilta-Sanomatthat Ristolainen has often been invited to national team events in the past, and this has not arrived.

“We decided that he should not be invited to this event, but it does not remove anything,” Lehtinen told IS.

“If and hopefully when NHL players are involved, the final team will possibly include players from outside this now-called group as well. ‘Rasse’ belongs to this division.”

Ristolainen has only played in the Lions in real games at the 2016 World Cup. In the NHL, the Turku-based defender has accumulated a total of 542 regular season matches in eight seasons – not a single playoff.

Like Lehtinen said NHL players’ participation in the Beijing Olympics is still uncertain. The NHL, the NHLPA and the IIHF are still negotiating player participation.

However, some step towards NHL star participation was taken last week when the NHL released its match program for next season. There are no games for the Olympics in the program.
