The self-proclaimed largest helmet manufacturer in the world, HJC, has recently added a new retro model to its range. The V90 is a retro-looking flip-up helmet with integrated sun visor. For the hipster who also wants some practical usability, so to speak.
The fiberglass V90 is equipped with a cool bubble screen that I immediately replaced with an opaque mirror copy. My medium fits perfectly, although the cheek pads do press into my jaws once the HJC helmet is closed. But you get used to it, because after a day of riding the Indian FTR and Chief I had no problems. Because of the mirror visor, I don’t use the sun visor, but I’m not in favor of those things anyway. The anatomy of my head has never fitted with an integrated sunshade. Either my fat nose is in the way, or my glasses, or I’m sitting on the bottom of the unfolded visor, resulting in some double vision. In the case of the V90 Mobix, it’s the latter.
But otherwise really no criticism of the wearing comfort. The fog in the Ardennes didn’t combine very well with the mirror visor, but that’s inherent in that type of visor; although it does not vaporize on the inside even without Pinlock. Once the sun showed itself from its warmest side, the ventilation was not that bad, and for the first time in my life I experienced the joys of driving through villages with the chin guard folded up. I’m getting old, maybe.
You usually need two hands to close the chin guard, but otherwise I have nothing to criticize about the V90, which looks pretty ‘retro chic’, especially in the Mobix version with two-tone gray color.
This HJC V90 just might become my new favorite jack-of-all-trades helmet that I am always the first to grab off the closet…
