History Violence, police ride, private machine and records – This is how the Hockey League has gone on Independence Day for decades

Independence Day now also offers domestic mainstream hockey players a game-free night, but the situation was different from the 1980s to the mid-1990s.

The SM League, founded in 1975, has played a total of 86 matches on Independence Day. There have been both records and special events on offer.

On December 8, 1979, HS wrote about how the Jokerit, who suffered a 3-6 loss in Rauma, anchored more and more tightly to the tail end of the league table.

“The opening goal of the clash was born in record time. Lock Jari Laiho shot the puck at the Joker’s finish after only five seconds had elapsed, ”HS repeated.

Laiho’s hit remained a league-time record in the sport’s statistical bible Hockey book according to the fall of 2020, until the TPS Markus Nurmi put a second better.

Laiho’s record was set aside as early as 1983 – even then on Independence Day. Ilves Jukka Tammi saved Seppo Ahokaisen a blue line shot between his legs.

“The goal was definitely my blunder. First itched and immediately in! It’s a mentally tough place. Self-confidence must gradually begin to build up with the help of successful combats, ”Tammi said on 8 December. in the published HS.

A quick setback did not discourage Ilves, but toppled Tappara 3–1.

“The finish was obviously my blunder.”

Legendary Ilves guard Jukka Tammi (front) told HS that the setback on Independence Day 1983 was his own blunder. Ilves finally won Tappara 3-1 in the match. Photo from the last Ilves evening at Hakametsä Ice Rink.

HIFK played its first Independence Day struggle during the league’s time in 1979, when it polluted Ilves’ Turkey with a crush of 11-2.

“Few teams in the Finnish Hockey League could afford paid training on Independence Day. HIFK, the leader of the league, can afford that right now, ”HS, who appeared on December 8, repeated a match in which Ilves was a“ perfect opponent ”.

Described as a red high-speed train, IFK, for its part, had the strikes in place, although HS doubted that the superiority seen in the eyes of the public would begin to stagnate alongside admiration.

The superiority lasted until the end, as IFK celebrated the Finnish Championship gold at the end of the season, in the spring of 1980. He was also the reigning champion on Independence Day 1983 when he visited Pori.

The headline of HS two days later said there was a rumble in Pori. Already at the beginning of the story, it was stated that the violence played a significant role in the events of the Pori region on Independence Day.

“In the Ostrobothnian Opera, Jussi killed Vallesmann and vice versa. The equipment of the Defense Forces was presented at the national parade. In practice, however, the toughest grips were rampant in the Finnish League hockey match Pori Ässät – Helsinki IFK, which ended 2–5 ”.

At the end of the same match report, it was mentioned that the number of ice skies was finally low. The ugliest tricks, such as spears, were also said to be missing from the match.

The ice skates for both teams were whistled for four to two minutes.

“In practice, however, the toughest grips were rampant in the Finnish Championship league’s hockey match, Pori Ässät – Helsinki IFK.”

HIFK has won the Jokers twice on Independence Day.

Helsinki domination was measured twice on Independence Day. The matches were a celebration for IFK – it took 9-23 goals in the 1981 fight and 6-2 matches in 1985.

The 1981 match became a nightmare for the Jokerie goalkeeper To Rauli Sohlman, who, according to HS, had had enough of the local game in ten minutes.

According to the HS on 8 December, IFK’s skate went and the shots were devilish, so Tony Ariman hit IFK’s fourth hit made Sohlman skate into the exchange box.

“Calm down, calm down, it’s not your fault. The field it’s leaking, not you, ”HS told the coach Olli Hietanen reassured Sohlman.

Hietanen gave Sohlman mercy for just ten minutes and passed him on the ice in the second installment. IFK: n Esa Peltonen made his 300th main series finish at the end of the opening round.

In the title of its 1985 match report, HS declared (8 December) Harri Tuohimaan the evening was perfect. The subheading said that the scepter of the capital belonged to IFK.

“Tuohimaa scored five of IFK’s six goals. It is pointless for a man to underestimate his stakes, as a number of fingers have been able to count on the same thing throughout the history of the league. ”

“Calm down, calm down, it’s not your fault. The field is leaking, not you. ”

Jokers the most memorable Independence Day matches were played in 1983 and 1984. In consecutive years, it won first Flies 8–2 and then Ilves 10–0.

On December 8, 1984, HS told how to aptly find the plot of the game. According to the magazine, the Jokers deserve a full ten for their game and attitude, Ilves was a full zero.

“Admittedly, any league team could have popped into the fireworks on the Jokers’ Independence Day, as much as the team was in the game. But you can lose in many ways. The lynx disappeared without spilling a drop of sweat, ”HS wrote.

In 1994, the Jokers had sweaty spots. President Martti Ahtisaari had called the NHL due to a lockout in Finland Jari Kurrin and Teemu Selänteen For the party of the castle, but before that we had to play a guest game in Kuopio. It was, of course, extended.

“We couldn’t afford any fuss. It was clear that Kurri and Selänne will play to the end, ”the Joker coach Hannu Aravirta said Ilta-Sanomat (December 7, 1994).

Your back scored two goals in the match that ended 3–3. Kurr’s balance was a goal feed. After the match, the duo were rushed to the airport on a police ride.

“After the game, we pulled up the tailcoats at a fast pace in the locker room and flew on a private plane organized by Seur magazine to Helsinki, where we met Sirpan and Jarin Tiinawith his wife. We missed the TV handshake, but we received special handshakes from Ahtisaari, ”Selänne recalls Ari Mennanderin in a biography he wrote Theme.

“After the game, we picked up the tailcoats at a fast pace in the locker room and flew to Helsinki on a private plane organized by Seura magazine.”

HIFK, who played in the opening round of the match in blue, faced Flies on the eve of Independence Day 2017 in Kaisaniemi Park.

Next it was the turn of coach Aravirta to attend the Castle Festival. Aravirta and other Joker World Champions Tero Lehterä, Janne Niinimaa, Mika Strömberg and Ari Sulander were allowed to rail over the tailcoat in a mood of defeat, as described by IS (December 7, 1995).

The five headed for the presidential palace in Kiekko-Espoo with a 1-2 loss to their necks.

Today’s league hockey players are not allowed to experience the same, because the agreement between the Finnish Hockey Association, ie the players’ association, and the Finnish Ice Hockey League Ltd convention guarantees players a day free of games until at least 2024.

The convention stipulates that any rehearsals for Independence Day must be held by 12 noon. League games are not played at that time, but travel is possible.

“However, if necessary, CHL games can be played on Independence Day,” the deal says.

In 2014, the situation was different, as the last match played on Independence Day so far, Lukko – Ilves was transferred just for Independence Day out of the way of the CHL game. The original Match Day was December 2nd.

Lukko defeated Ilves 2-1. The club will also go down in history as the winner of the league’s first Independence Day match, when KOO-VEE crashed away 4-1 in 1975.

Today, league clubs play their own themed matches under Independence Day. For example, in 2017, IFK will host Kärppi on the eve of Independence Day in Kaisaniemi Park in front of 16,000 spectators. The match ended in a 4-3 win for Kärppie with extra time.
