History|The ship was used by both the US and Japanese navies in World War II.
The summary is made by artificial intelligence and checked by a human.
The wreck of a World War II fighter was found off the coast of California in exceptionally good condition.
Ocean Infinity found the destroyer USS Stewart in the Cordell Bank Marine Reserve in August.
The USS Stewart was the only US destroyer captured by Japan and used for its own purposes.
The ship’s history is well documented, but its current condition was a mystery before the discovery.
of California the wreckage of a fighter jet used by the United States and Japan in World War II has been found on the coast in exceptionally good condition. The discovery is reported, among other things, by the US media The New York Times (NOW), CNN and New York Post.
Ocean Infinity, a Texas-based specialist in marine robotics, discovered the ship at the beginning of August. The company’s robots were exploring an area of about 130 square kilometers at the bottom of the sea when their sonar systems detected the ship at a depth of about a kilometer.
Known as the USS Stewart and DD-224, the 95-meter destroyer was found in the Cordell Bank Marine Reserve. The ship is also known as the “Ghost Ship of the Pacific”.
“The fact that the ship has been preserved so well is exceptional for a ship of this age. It is known to be one of the best-preserved four-barreled destroyers in the US Navy,” said Cordell Bank Director Mary Brown in the announcement according to NYT.
Three days later, the company sent more robots to film the historic vision.
Over a hundred years the then-built USS Stewart was the only US Navy destroyer that Japan managed to capture in World War II.
Japan managed to damage the destroyer practically beyond repair in a naval battle near the Indonesian island of Bali in 1942. At the shipyard, the ship capsized and was further damaged.
The ship was sunk and abandoned by the US Navy. The name USS Stewart was transferred to another warship.
More than a year later, American pilots spotted a ship far out in enemy waters that was clearly not Japanese. Japan had raised and repaired DD-224 and began using it as an escort ship against the United States. In the United States, the destroyer was christened Ghost Ship, in Japan it was named Patrol Vessel number 102.
In September 1945, Japan surrendered. The Americans found an exploded but still afloat ship in the port of Kure in Japan.
The US got the DD-224 back. The ship was taken to California, where the Navy used it as a target for practice firing. After two hours of firing, DD-224 sank and disappeared.
Fighter feverishly searched for years for the head of the US Air/Sea Heritage Foundation Russ Matthews. He got his hands on a US Navy communication from 1946, based on which it was possible to conclude that the shipwreck was located somewhere in the Cordell Bank marine protected area.
“The entire history of the ship is exceptionally well documented. The only missing piece of the story was how it looks today,” Matthews commented according to NYT.
Matthews got the insured Ocean Infinity to organize a test dive in the area. The company’s robots found the ship after only a few hours of searching. The company has previously participated, for example, in 2014 in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft for searches.
