The Belgian circuit of Spa-Francorchamps is experiencing today one of the saddest pages of its extra-sporting history: the legendary one chalet placed at the top of the curve Eau Rouge-Raidillon, which offered a unique and exceptional view to the spectators on the equally famous stretch – from which one could clearly identify and recognize the same structure – was in fact demolished. A choice made mandatory by the interventions that will be carried out to make a section of the circuit that is as exciting as it has now become too dangerous, as evidenced by the serious accidents that have occurred in recent years, in particular with the death of Anthoine Hubert which took place in Formula 2 in 2019.
Regardless of the works and projects that will be implemented in order to avoid other painful episodes, the news of the demolition of the chalet represents, as defined by the Belgian channel RTL, “A wound in the hearts of many fans, who recognized the structure as a point of reference for Spa and for Formula 1”. The chalet, which belonged to the EBRT (East Belgian Racing Team), was inaugurated in 1985, and since then it has become a mythical reference point for the circuit and for enthusiasts.
In addition to the aforementioned works that will improve the safety level of the track, aimed at reaching grade C from the FIM for the disputes of international motorcycle competitions, a new grandstand. In this way, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit will thus be able to accommodate 13,000 more seats, at the cost of a “farewell” to a symbol of this legendary track.
