The work of the Transport Commission on the review of the amendments to the Highway Code has been completed. The text will now arrive in the Chamber, for a vote in the House and Senate. The announcement was made by the Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini, who thanked the parties involved in the work on the document, confirming some of the innovations that had been proposed in recent months. Since September there has been no certain news on when the new Council of Ministers would reach the approval process with the approval of some amendments and the definitive discussion should begin in March.
New sanctions
Among the amendments approved by the Chamber's Transport Commission, there would be one that reduces the amounts of fines for those caught using a mobile phone while driving: the text now provides for fines from 250 euros to a maximum of 1,000 euros, compared to the preliminary test which instead, from a minimum it had a range between 422 euros and a maximum of 1,697 euros. Fines for repeat offenders are also lowered, from 644 and 2,588 euros to a range between 350 and 1,400 euros.
Temporary license suspension
However, the most important change for those who are sanctioned for using a mobile phone while driving concerns the short-term suspension of their driving licence. In fact, the text provides: “The application of the additional administrative sanction of suspension of the driving license from one to three months, if the same person commits a further violation over the course of a two-year period.” In fact, the timing varies depending on some criteria, such as the number of points on the driving licence. If you have at least 10 points on your driving license but still less than 20, your license will be immediately suspended for one week. However, if you have less than 10 points, the suspension will last 15 days. In both cases, the suspension time will double if cell phone use causes an accident. However, with 20 points on the license, there is no suspension.
