More than a million and a half people have lost their lives victims of the covid and the WHO predicts that another 700,000 will die until March
The numbers couldn’t be more alarming. More than a million and a half Europeans have lost their lives to the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic and the rates of new cases also show an alarming rebound that points to a social crisis in the face of Christmas and next spring. Infections last week stood at an average of 369,915 new cases, an increase of 14% compared to the previous one.
The Old Continent is on the brink of the abyss with a population that continues to be unaware of the urgency of mass vaccination. On the contrary, protests against the health pass, the mandatory immunization of the population and the new restrictions are multiplying.
It is urgent to arm yourself before the new wave of covid that will trigger the incidence with the low temperatures that devastate all its countries, including the Mediterranean. The cold constitutes, according to the experts, the ideal breeding ground for an infection that undoubtedly continues among us. The denial of those who refuse to be vaccinated represents the main danger in countries such as Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, France …

France.
Extend the reinforcement to those over 18 years of age. The French Government will open from this Saturday the campaign to reinforce the vaccine against covid-19 to all those over 18 years of age, announced the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran. Adults who already have the full regimen will be able to take the extra dose five months after the last injection. Until now, only those over 65 could do it. -
South Africa.
New variant with multiple mutations. A new variant of COVID-19, potentially more contagious and with an “extremely high” number of mutations, has been detected in South Africa. B.1.1.529 has “a very high potential for spread” until it becomes dominant, like the Delta, declared virologist Tulio de Oliveira at a press conference of the Ministry of Health. -
Denmark.
Complement dose for adults. Denmark will offer booster vaccines against covid to all people over the age of 18 in the face of an increase in cases. The health authority of the Nordic country reported this Thursday that “the decrease in immunity is occurring in the youngest people in an alarming way, who are beginning to fill the emergency rooms of hospitals.” -
Belgium.
New limitations for the hospitality industry. The federal and regional governments in Belgium will study this Friday new restriction measures in the hospitality sector, such as closing at midnight or a maximum of people per table, to try to contain the rebound in the number of infections and hospital admissions due to coronavirus just a week after reviewing the protocols. -
Czech Republic.
State of Emergency for thirty days. The Czech Government declared a State of Emergency for thirty days on Thursday, at the same time that it announced the closure of the Christmas markets to try to stop the infections. The Czech Republic, with 10.7 million inhabitants, registered 18,004 new infections on Wednesday, compared to 25,877 the day before.
The authorities advocate reinstating the restrictions in the midst of social discontent, reflected in hundreds of demonstrations throughout all countries to reject the new confinements, the restrictions and, especially, against the covid passport. Many of these protests even end in violent riots, forcing security forces to use water cannons and tear gas to disperse the rallies.
In some countries, to avoid high infection rates and hospital collapse, negative PCR will not suffice as a covid certificate. In addition, many companies will force their unvaccinated workers to have weekly tests. Some public places will also be closed.
There are plenty of reasons for this. This week in the 52 countries of the continent a daily average of 4,210 deaths has been recorded, according to official reports. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the actual numbers of victims of this pandemic are far higher.
Hell of Russia
The most affected country is Russia, which registers about 30% of the total deaths registered in the region, with an average of 1,246 each day. In total, the Kremlin has recorded 269,057 deaths since the first case occurred in early 2020, but, according to the national statistics agency Rosstat, the deaths were close to 450,000 at the end of September.
Behind Russia are the United Kingdom (144,286) and Italy (133,415). In Germany, where the pandemic has resurfaced strongly due in large part to the slowness of vaccination, this Thursday the barrier of 100,000 deaths was exceeded and a record of daily infections was registered, exceeding 75,000.
In the European Union at this time, 67.7% of the population has received at least two doses of the vaccine, although the differences are notorious. According to figures from Tuesday, only 24.2% of Bulgarians are immunized, compared to 86.7% of Portuguese.
The WHO ventures a resurgence of covid-19 that will cause an additional 700,000 deaths between now and March if the current trend continues. Therefore, by spring the total of deaths will reach 2.2 million. Europe must take “urgently” measures to try to stop this wave, warned, for its part, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the EU health agency in charge of epidemics.
