Hi-Rez Studios has announced a new round of layoffs aimed at the “internal reorganization and reprioritization” of objectives. All sectors of the software house affected, currently busy with Smite 2 and in the maintenance of other live services.
Stewart Chisam, the CEO of Hi-Rez, did not reveal the exact number of those fired, but spoke in particular of cuts in the publishing and marketing sectors. The Evil Mojo, G&A, and Titan Forge divisions are also affected, as are developers working on “cosmetic content and system features.”
The responsibilities
Chisam directly cited Smite 2’s positioning as one of the issues that must be overcome to ensure its success long-term sustainability. Evidently the game isn’t going as hoped. The cuts were made after a complete review of the company’s strategies.
The executive naturally expressed his support for all those made redundant: “Letting them go was a heartbreaking decision, which reflects a failure in my leadership and for which I take full responsibility. These are all good people who have contributed positively to the agency; no one should consider it a personal failure. I express my heartfelt thanks to them for their contributions to the company and for their role in helping entertain and bring joy to millions of gamers.”
In summary: the responsibility is theirs, but they are the ones fired. Chisam still believes the changes will make Hi-rez stronger, the same thing he said in June 2023 when 30 employees were laid off. What to add? Let’s hope Hi-Rez gets back on its feet and isn’t forced to lay off any more staff.
